Like many of you, I have given up on vinegar but the hewing hatchet had some strange stuff going on. There was a bunch of grinding on the flat side, and it had obviously been used for a wedge. In other to clean up the damage I left a lot of shiny steel and wanted to do something at least to make it look uniform. So I threw it in some vinegar. That turned out to be an error. The markings that were on it were apparently preserved in rust and are virtually impossible to see now. It used to say Bridge Tool Co St Louis Mo Cast Steel. I found one thread here, but nothing else. What I did find after the vinegar however was that the eye had been cracked and welded, and then ground by a 4 year old.

The little hatchet though has a really weak stamp. Is it enough for you guys to recognize?

Just for reference this is how they looked originally.

Well, that was easy! With your information I was able to find buckets of details. Thank you! The Bridge Company might be more mysterious from the looks of it.
