Somebody tell me if this is a good idea...

So im thinking a Dual-Action Out the front knife, where it has some kind of hard metal in the shape of a v in the opening of the knife that, when engaged (by a switch) moves to where the edge of the knife will be when it opens. couple open and closes, and your knife is fully sharp again. hmm?

@ jc, i mean it engages and disengages with a switch, it wouldn't be in the way all the time, therefor it wouldn't sharpen all the time.

@ freedoom, what if the sharpener was on springs and got closer as the knife wore down?

Hmmm, its a good idea for some people. I mean this in a good way, for the simple reason that I like to put my own edge on my knives. But with a switch I could still put my own edge on and give it a touch up every now and then when I'm not home for long periods of time.

Over all it's a good idea, I'd just like to see how thick the knife would be.

There actually are folding knives out there that self-sharpen when opened/closed. They have little ceramic plates imbedded in the liners that rub on the blade as it moves.

I would think it would be better if it wasn't a "Sharpener" per say... But if it were a small butchers steel to hone the edge.
