My family has 2,

mid/late 80s kawasaki bayou 220

and an 09 (I think) Suzuki Eiger 400.

I like the older bayou better, its clutch less manual which i like as well as I am the only one who really uses it so I will probably be able to take it whenever I move out. That and I have put time into that one trying to get it running again after it sat for 4 years.....that was a pain, turns out it was just blowing fuses every time you tried to start it. fixed that and it runs like nothing. Its easier to start form cold than the big one, especially if you have to pullstart both of htem

I have a 2009 Yamaha Grizzly 550 with power assist steering; awesome machine. It is used every day all year long and never fails to start.

Used around the farm for chores (hauling firewood/hay, pulling manure spreader and dump cart, plowing snow) and has front and rear baskets to carry all sorts of stuff/tools.

I have a 2006 Arctic cat 400. Use it on a regular basis to haul logs, basic yard work, and of course riding in the woods. Run it on the Hatfield McCoy trails every year and it's never failed me.

I have two...A 650 Honda Rincon and a 400 Yamaha...Riding dailey here on the farm and taken on long trips to Ky...Riding 54 miles in one day....Grand kids love them.....carl

I'd like me one of these, amphibious and with tracks as an option, it goes everywhere! haha!

1996 Yamaha Kodiak 400. I use it like a skidder and for going to the remote cabin. My poor aching body reminds me of the lousy trail each time I have to use it. It only has independant suspension on the front and a fixed axle in the rear. I wonder how the new machines compare to these old dinosaur work horses in terms of comfort and performance.

Depending on the environment and intended use, something like that could be a great option. I know Polaris has tracks as an option for some of its UTV's. My friend is real happy with his Kubota RTV1100 (he likes diesels most).

Myself, the John Deere 825 UTV looks like a pretty hot option for farm, nursery, or ranch use.

Full suspension works. I would suggest doing a demo at a dealer with a test track. Take yours across the rocks, or whatever they have and, then take a full suspension modern machine across. I think you will find yourself asking about trade-in values on your current machine. You will also want to check into the modern UTV's as well.

Griz 600, pimped with ITP wheels & tires, Warn winch, Warn bumper & lights, etc..

The other thing I wonder is how well the new power steering mechanisms work, the old machine is really hard on my upper body and the tender rotory cuff that tore and try to avoid over doing it. Those Polaris ATVs have caught my eye in recent years.

Bufford,
My 2009 Yamaha Griz has the power assist and it works great.

My wife has rotator cuff problems and that is the reason I traded my older Griz for this one. The steering is now very light and easy, and her shoulder no longer bothers her. Made a huge difference.

Also, going fast over rough terrain, the handle bars don't feel like they will get away from you, and there is no struggling to control the machine.

Use to have two later 90's Honda 4trax's.

Now I taken a liking to other things. :)

Goes just about anywhere my ATV's would, and it's much more capable of hauling. Being a diesel is nice too. Lots of power. Kubota RTV 900.

i would love to have one but we just do not have the room to ride it. :o

2005 Polaris Ranger 500 and a 2004 Yamaha Grizzly 660. Both have been used pretty hard, but still do the job. Would love to upgrade but both run and work so no reason to.

I definitely like the idea of power steering together with having a steering wheel instead of handle bars, making it like a small skidder. Some good ideas here.

Update. I just purchased a 2011 Yamaha Grizzley 550 with fuel injection, power steering 4 wheel drive on demand after nearly getting killed by the old 96 Kodiak 400 when the tranny gave me grief while climbing a hill. I had tranny issues where the machine will unexpectedly pop out of gear. The problem would occurr when driving on level surfaces and it wasn't posing a problem, but when it gave out going up the hill I damned near rolled it. After the ATV accident where my brother inlaw broke his hip last fall when his machine rolled back on him, made me park the old one permanently and sell for parts.

Dealer will have it ready in a couple of days. I will comment on it once I ride it.

Bufford, excellent choice.

The power steering and fuel injection are huge improvements over the earlier models. In cold weather, no more having to fiddle with the choke as it warms up.

The ride quality is so much better, too, that you will not believe the difference. These new generation ATVs are awesome.
