Man, that sounds bad - but then again how bad could it be if you found time to post here first :) !

Keep your fingers away from cutting end on whatever is in that spindle, especially when side milling, it will pull finger in and crush/cut them w/o any hesitation. Won't be much left to re-attach.

dont have your hands near any moving parts, ive heard of people losing both fingers and hands.

A guy I know (sorry, "knew", he's gone now) Dave Manzier, did the tape on the hit, tap, miss blues of Little Giant trip hammers. I ordered his 2nd tape last year because I enjoyed his first so much. I was surprised to see his index finger gone from his right hand. He had been milling, using a fairly large end mill. He also was wearing gloves. He reached around the spindle to do something or other, and the endmill grabbed the glove. It continued around about 3/4 turn until finally Dave's "tissue" was to much for the machine, and it stalled. Before it stalled it removed the index finger, and caused 3 bones in his hand to puncture his skin (from the inside!) and expose to the outside. Very nasty wound! He used to keep the glove tacked on the wall next to the bit. So, I never wear gloves around that kind of stuff anymore. BTW does anyone know what happened to Dave? I understand he passed away last year sometime, but I never heard what happened.
(Another note: the end mill was one of those large end mills, maybe a flycutter. It looked on the tape to be at least 2", and maybe 3" in diameter.

i was watching a show not too long ago i think it was build or bust a young kid was on the mill. and got in a fight with the end mill and geez that poor kid there was nearly nothing left of his hand totally mangled. blood and guts everywhere it was not a pretty sight at all....

Man that SUX...

When I had my Machine shop years ago I had a guy that always used his finger to wipe chips away while he was miling parts to see the finish.
One day his finger went between the part and the end mill when he was milling the side of a block.
He has no finger now.

RJ is right... Never wear gloves while milling and always keep your witts about you when working on machines.
They will take parts of your body and not give them back.

Get better.

Ouch. That is scary.

I got bit by a chainsaw last week myself and it's moments like that that really remind us that cutting and grinding tools do their job very well. No matter how confident we become with our tools we can never get careless.

I'll admit that I have gotten sliced from endmills and drill bits occasionally. NEVER while runnning in a machine, though - usually from wiping them off with a rag. Slices right throungh the rag and right through my thumb. Those cuts hurt like hell too. You can feel them slicing right into the flesh as it happens! >>>shiver<<< I HATE that!

I keep a small paint brush (about 1-1/2 to 2" wide) on most of my machine tools for the sole purpose of brushing chips away from the cutting zone. Over time, the bristles get chomped shorter making them stiffer and more effective. These brushes can also be used to apply coolant/lubricant to the cutting tool while the machine is running.

Shop accidents bite the big one royally!
