Yeah...but tell me that the thought wouldn't occur to him to grab the fin and go for a ride. :)

Need to "swallow"? Ya sure ya betcha!!

Are you sure that's a toothie? Looks like a dolphin dorsal...'course that's the sort of mistake you only make once.

Never seen a shark ride a preassure wave like that.

I thought it was a dolphin too Oku.

But....I have seen a small blue chase a mate in a wave, 3 times! He would have only taken a foot off, maybe a bit more, but...

We were outstanded on the beach...told him to come in, but noooooo, "Shes cool mate, he wont eat much..."

what about mum?

LMAO :D :D Good one Ian! . . . And I'm with you! That had better be a shape-shifting land shark if it wants to get near me and my INFI!!!  ;)

I've been interested in sharks for a long time but even with the knowledge I've got, I couldn't be sure if that was a shark of a dolphin. The front looks like a shark, the back like a dolphin (atleast to me).

Ofcourse it's the one you don't see that you need to be worried about, and yes, that means being worried all the time!

If you've ever seen a nature show where they take a plane up and film the shore of a sandy beach from the air, you know how many sharks hag out in the shallow water....it's quite alot. For the most part aslong as you're not bleeding or doing impressions of dying fish, you've got nothing to worry about.

And here was me thinking Guy was going to post a great pic of a Busse Shark. :D

Show this to BB and see if she would like to play in the ocean again:D

Matt, I use to work offshore on the oil & gas platforms and when we use to take the choppers offshore, we use to see some awesome sharks! The largest was about 15' makes you really wonder why we used to jump on those surf skis and row live baits out past the bar. In really studying the photo, I think this thing is a shark and at best guess, would say South Africa. Still, regardless of shark, porpoise or squid, I would have still paddled like @#$%^&* the other way!!!!!

Mystery solved:

The photograph displayed above is indeed real, but it doesn't depict the hair-raising scene most viewers think it does.

This picture was taken by photographer Kurt Jones on 9 April 2003 at Surfrider Beach in Malibu, one of California's premier surfing beaches. But as the version of the photograph posted on the web indicates, however, the ominous-looking finned creature lurking just beneath the surface of the waves is a dolphin (possibly a bottlenose), not a shark.

A subsequent photograph of the animal taken later in the day demonstrates conclusively that it was in fact a dolphin:

EDIT: DAMNIT!!!

I dunno, top photo looks to be a different animal than the dolphin below. Tail looks vertical, top fin different, and general profile not dolphin like at all. We see dolphin all the time fishing out in the Gulf stream, and once you have seen a few dorsals it's obvious even at a casual glance. Dolphin dorsals have a curved look to them, sharks like a triangle. Of course, I wouldn't grab aholt to test the theory. Also sharks usually leave the area when dolphins show up, so this guy MAY have photographed 2 different animals. Perhaps not.

That dorsal appears to be swept.

Given the location where the photo was taken it almost HAS to be a dolphin.

I grew up surfing in Santa Barbara which is about 50 miles northwest of Malibu.

About 3 years after Jaws was released, a fisherman caught a 25 foot White about 15 miles directly off my home beach. The biggest toothie I ever surfed around was a 15 foot tiger. We treated it like a bee and left it alone.
