I can't wait to start using it. I got it from Maxim Oil out of Texas. They're good to deal with.
I opened it... wow, it's really thin and nicely transparent. Just a little higher viscosity than kerosene!

I recently got a new second anvil, a Trenton #145. I sold out my smaller Peter Wright (#119) to get it, straight across. It's a good one. Also, I just built myself a 2-1/2 lb. Japanese style cutler's hammer, out of a recycled old double jack hammer. I used purpleheart for the handle.

The last part for the powerhammer should be coming in this week...

So, I've got some fun forging in the near future trying all this stuff out.

Just wanted to exult a bit.

Hey bro i got my 5 gal of parks 50 from maxim today to, i ordered thursday and it was here today,121.68 shipped fedex, cant beat that, im ready to see what kinda hamon i can produce with it,im excited too!!!

Will you guys be using the parks 50 for all your blades, or is it to "fast" for some steels. I have done some searching and found that the parks is not necessary for say O1. But is the way to go with 1095, 1084. I am in the process of building a heat treat oven and will need some oil. I'm just wondering if the parks 50 is the best way to go? The steels I have used so far are O1, 5160, and recently 1095, and I have some 1084 also from Alod I plan to use very soon. $121.00 seems like a reasonable price shipped from texas.

All i ever use is aldo's steel, for the most part every knife i make i use his 1095,and parks is perfect for that, but i got a peice of 52100 im work on to i may use somethin else to quench it in

It is definitely too fast for really thin sections of Cru Forge V like you would use for Japanese style kitchen knives. For Cru Forge in sections of 3/16 or more, it works just fine.

Ooh la lah.... I got my pail of Parks 50 yesterday!! Buying stuff for making knives is almost as fun as making knives. I can't wait for updates on your LG. I want one sooo badly. And a press too! Still building yours Salem?

Yes Brian, I'm still going to build my press. I have the motor, ram, and the steel for the frame so far. But the hammer has superseded it for now. Both is the perfect combo though, can't wait for that either.

Funny you and Bill just got some P50 in, too. Right on. I know Bill's gonna have some nice ones up for sale soon with some mean hamons.

Joe, I saw your thread about the "ping" over at KKF, I'll probably try quenching CruForge sporting knives in P50 but nothing real thin.

I have 2 types of quench oil. I use P-50 for the stuff that needs a fast quench and McMaster-Carr 11 second oil for everything else. Some say the 11 second oil is too fast for O-1, 5160, & 52100 but I have used it on all 3 of these and haven't cracked a blade yet. I love your work Salem and can't wait to see some of the stuff you make with your new "toys". Have fun,

Darrin

I have both Parks 50 and Parks AAA. I quench W2, W1 and all the 10 xxx series steels in the P-50. I quench O1, 5160, L6, 52100, etc... in the Parks AAA. So far, it's working perfectly.

I bought some P-50 from maxim a few months ago. Very pleasant to deal with, and by far the best prices around.
Right now I only use it for 10xx and like steels. For steels like O1, I just use regular veg oil.

How did you guys contact them (Maxim Oil) ? I send an email last week but havnt had a response yet , maybe stuck in spam ??

You're welcome Salem. They have the 11 second oil and a if I remember correctly they have a 28 second oil which is really close to AAA. Both are cheaper than Parks produts and like I said I've had no trouble with the 11 second oil and slower steels and on the plus side blades come out HARD. Had some untempered 52100 test out at 67HRC. How much do you need? I could probably spare a gallon or so. Just pay the freight and I'll send ya a little to play with.

If you quench O-1, 5160, 52100, or any other metal that does not require a fast oil in Parks 50 what will happen. Will it crack em or warp em? If it doesn't crack or warp them is it a good heat treat?
Thanks,
Doug
