Hi all! Yes, it's me again. You guys must be sick by now reading my sharpening problems but i still need help.....
I got my Lansky 2 days ago and started on my blades. As happy as i was, i got good results on the Gerber A-F folder but the P.Hobbit folder is another head cracker....
Either ATS-34 is too hard or the Lansky has got problems, well actually a little bit of both!
The extra coarse stone got smooth! I cleaned it with the honning oil over and over(with a tooth brush)but i still can't get the residuals out, why? Please help? Thanks.

I've been using 60 grit sand paper to clean the coarse stones and finer grits on the finer stones with good results, I also don't use honing oil when I'm sharpening, this seems to cut done on the stone getting clogged as easily.

Thanks guys! How long do you need to spend on sharpening a ATS-34 blade? The Gerber only took me 35 minutes, but ATS-34 seems forever....or maybe is because of the cloged stone...

If cleanning the stone does not work, get the hardest sand paper you can find. Put the paper on a flat surfice and rub hard. You are really trying to take off a thin layor of the stone. A diamond hone works well for this also.
ATS will take a little longer, but not a hole lot. I beleive it is because your stone is plugged up. I also do not use the oil at all, I think it just makes a mess. I would say take the oil and toss it so you are not tempted to use it.

The problem is one of technique-very common with Lansky. You're trying to use a system with set angles to sharpen a knife that was originally ground to another angle. The Lansky system has set angles and you need to start by grinding the bevel to one of those angles using the coarse stones. You need to get it done completely before moving to smaller grits. Once you've reground the bevel, maintenance is easy and you'll be able to get the knife as sharp as it can be. For the Covert, I'd recommend the 20 degree angle. Take care.

I actually got a lesson from the knife shop owner before i started and i did start with the extra coarse stone to get the proper angle for the rest to follow, but i guess is the cloged stone. I'll be going home tonight to clean to stone as have mentioned in the above tread by your guys(thanks again) and will let yall' know if it works.

some guys use diamond coated lansky stones
maybe you can order a coarse stone to create the bevels.
that ought to work

If you are thinking about getting a Lansky diamond hone don't get the ex.-course diamnond. It is way too course.

Keninshiro,

Maybe there is something wrong with your Lansky course stone. If ATS-34 is actually eroding your stone something is wrong with it. Do you mean the stone is gumming up and becoming smooth.

I have a Pioneer Tanto (REKAT made ATS 34 knife)which took less than 30 minutes to sharpen brand new with the Lansky. Once the edge was profiled it is even quicker to maintain it.
