Got me a Leatherman

It is an original PST that I got out of eBay for a pretty fair price (15). Looks unused:) The only downside is that it was logo for Lab Gruppen, a Swedish Amp maker. Anyhow, I have found it to be a nice tool- even came with a leather sheath (the type I desired).
Here are some pictures:

If it's unused, then $15 was a mighty good deal! Reading your post made me get my old PST out of the shoebox and take another look at it. Other than a few features added to the Supertool 200 that I like, I haven't found much in the newer Leatherman models that strike my fancy like the original tool does. Of course that didn't stop me from buying a few newer models to test out over the last couple of years, but I think that all and all the original PST is probably one of the best Leatherman versions out there. Good find and I hope you enjoy it!

Just out of curiosity; when was your PST made? (Check for the month/year date code stamped on the inside surface of each handle. Older ones might not have it.)

I'm not sure if you're talking to mp510 or myself, but in case you're talking to me - I looked inside the handles and don't see any kind of markings. I bought my PST new out of the ship's store while on deployment sometime in 1993. As was the norm at the time, highly sought after Leatherman tools sold out within a day or two of stocking the shelves with them, so I expect that my multi-tool couldn't have been too old at the time. It doesn't have a hard wire cutting notch in it either, as I noticed the newer PST versions do have that feature.

We need to call in our resident Leatherman Historian, Mr. JoeBW, for the answer to this one. Hey Joe, you out there?

#1) What year did Leatherman begin stamping the date codes on the inside of the handles?

#2) What year did they add the hard-wire cutting notch to the Leatherman PST?

I bought my Leatherman tool (before it was called the PST) in November 1991 for $36.99. It does not bear a date code nor have a hard wire cutter.

It is more robust, but weighs less than today's Juice CS4. The pliers head and screwdriver blades are longer, too.

Speaking of dates and such, when did the term PST come to life? I never thought about it till this thread came around, but I don't think there were any other Leatherman models to choose from when I got this one. I certainly don't remember seeing any other models at the time. On one side mine says "Leatherman Tool". I know the newer models usually have the actual model name stamped on there.

Hi All,

Sorry, no answers to the questions, but a few clues.

Hard Wire Notch - I have a 1991 PST with a hard wire notch, - so it was before then.

Date Stamp - my 1991 PST doesn't have it. Bob - you mentioned a 1993 Tenth Anniv model - if you have one, could you check for date stamping?

Joe

My PST does have a wire cutter on the rear of the plier (works good!). On the handle bearing the knife blade, there is the following numeric "code" 0402.
If that's it, I'm not sure. Maybe it will do some good. I'll email Lab.Gruppen and see if they knows when these were commissioned.

0402 means that your PST was produced in April of 2002. Also, there should be a date code (sometimes a month or two different) inside the other handle.

As near as I can figure, sometime in the early 1990's Leatherman added the hard-wire notch to the PST, and began date coding their products.

Never looked before, but I just pulled out my old pst and found 1293 on one handle, and 1193 on the other.

It doesn't have the hard wire cutter, so I'm not sure what's going on there, since JoeBW's is a 91 w/ hard wire cutter.

As far as date stamping, with what JoeBW said, they must have started date stamping before November 93, and after 91.

I noticed it has the wider plier head which was a later feature but I have not seen any like that without the hard wire cutter. Very curious indeed.

My 1993 Tenth Anniversary tool has date stamps of 0993 and 0993. Curiously however, it does not have a hard-wire notch.

An older PST, which I obtained sometime in the mid-1980's, has no hard-wire notch and no date stamping.

And a black oxide finished PST of mine, which does have a hard-wire notch, is stamped 0494 on one handle, but is blank on the other handle.

I just went over the second handle very carefully, with a light and magnifier, and there was no numeric or other characters stampeed there.

Maybe they forgot to stamp it, or they changed the stamping pattern over time. Maybe I'll contact the Leatherman company, and see what they have to say.

I confirmed the 2002 production date- that's when the marketing representative with Lab Gruppen told me they were purchase. Iincluding the text of his reply below:
Hi Joe

The Leathermans (Leathermen?) were purchased in 2002. Hope this helps.

Cheers!!!
