Got me a Tilley! And a new solo tent

I found out some very, very, very sad news today. My local Sportsman's Warehouse is closing down!!!! I'm hugely distraught. But, the silver lining is that they were having a large 10-30% off sale on many items. Not too many good knives were around (thought of getting a CS Canadian or Roach Belly just cuz, but they'd still be like $12 and I'd rather have a mora).

But I did pick up a Tilley! I've been wanting one for a long while. Paid something like $55 for it. Finally a hat that fits my head though! My wife hates it on me, hehe. It's this model I think, but with a green underbrim:

I love this thing so far.

Also got one of those cool 'fold-a-cup', the rubber cups that fold into themselves. I've wanted one ever since I saw a Ray Mears video where some swedish soldiers were drinking from one in survival training. It just made it look so warm and satisfying. :D

I also bought a Eureka Solitaire solo tent, because I've been looking for some kind of bivy setup for solo camping to keep the bugs out. Given the sale, this one came home. It was not used to my knowledge (opened up like a new package), but one of the pieces to a fiberglass support rod was shattered in two! I've tried taping it but it's not holding well and I know it will puncture the nylon if I breaks when set up. I've contacted them about the warranty issue, so we'll see what they do. (And depressingly I can't return it to the store since they're closing down.)

Anywho, it was a good day! Again! I'm racking in the good tuff this week. :p

PS- I'm really, really loving my BK9. I've used it all weekend for clearing some backyard stuff, starting a fire (splitting wood, etc), sectioning watermelon, you name it! Great blade.

Good stuff Will...I hear ya on the Tilley, my wife wont let me have one, she said she would make fun of me relentlesly. :grumpy: I have a sweet patagonia boonie that she likes on me though, and it does the trick.

Those tents are sweet. Ive used green saplings in a pinch for poles before. Might try that. It will reduce pack size and weight if it will work for ya. I have a slumberjack bivy that is pretty much a solitare tent. You will love it. Mine fits in a Xtra small stuff sack and is bout the size and weight of a football when packed. Im gonna eventually try my hand at sewing my own Bivy tent out of some silnylon, and also making my own quilt from a kit from thru hiker, modified with snaps instead of zippers, gonna be my winter project if I can find a sewing machine at a garage sale for cheap.

whew... sorry for the ramble. :o

Sounds like Tilley T6 Airflow, I got one for myself when hot weather got here, and love it. Most comfortable hat I own.

Great scores Will.

Sorry to hear about the tent, hopefully their warrantee will over it.

I look dashingly handsome in my Tilley, maybe its just in the genes :D Great score - best damn hat that is out there. I do prefer the Hemp Tilleys, just because I like the feel of the fabric, but I use their nylon ones for the boat as they are lighter and more waterproof. Yeah I have two Tilleys and my wife also has two Tilleys. $55 is an awesome deal. Don't forget to fill out the registration, Tilley provides you with replacement insurance if lost prorated to the time since purchase. They also have a full lifetime warranty.

Too bad about the tent pole, but I bet Eureka will send you out a new one. If not, check out REI to see if they can provide you with a set of tent poles. I bet they can at a small cost if they sell your model of tent.

Love the folding cups and actually had it in my hand at REI last time. Talking to wife with my puppydog look about how cool it is. She saw the $14 price tag and just shook her head. At least I slipped in another pack of their windproof/waterproof matches in there....

A Tilley hat definitely puts you in the land of Geekdom!!!!

However, I've had one, now, for about 5-6 years and wouldn't want to be without it. :o It is the nylon one without the air ventilation near the crown and it is a hot SOB, though. :(

GEEK-CANADA

I haven't been to the LEX Sportsmans yet since they announced the closing, but I have picked up some real deals at that same store before Spooky. I bought a Spyderco Woodlander there for right at a $100.00 awhile back. I hate to see that store go:(

Does the high air flow Tilley have the hidden pocket? If so, can you get some folded money in there along with a Spyderco Dragonfly or the even smaller Ladybug?

Just a heads-up, Spooky. When they SW in Austin shut down, they went as low as 75-80% off before the store closed. Of course, the selection was greatly diminished, but they still had some pretty nifty widgets available. I picked up a Brunton Atlas MNS GPS for about $30. The tag said $400. I also got a pair of nice Danners with safety toes for $55. So yea...you may want to make a few trips out there. :D

Also, I learned that the employees weren't too pleased with the prospects of having to hunt for jobs, and everything is being liquidated, so they would sell anything that didn't have a tag for like $1-5. I didn't realize this until I looked at my receipt and all my deerskin palmed gloves were next to nothing.

I have two Tilleys as well, one is the airflo, and I love it. Oddly, in the store, the Tilleys fit, according to instructions, but were slightly tight when I got them home. None the less, the airflo model is a great hat, usually I put it over my face while sleeping during the day to keep the sun off. The vents help keep it comfortable.

Go back and get the rubber cup, it is really convenient. one nice thing is it does not wear holes in your pack. it also makes a nice berry basket so you don't stain your Tilley.

Other than the color, the Eureka solitaire is a mighty fine tent. I think you can order aluminum poles for it, and I am going to look into that for mine. stretch it tight though, I found the reports for it's condensation problems true, but if the tent is properly taught, the condensation problems are minimal, if any problem at all. My favorite feature is the dorsal zipper, and that if you have to, you can use four stakes to set it up, ( Nice to get away from a bug invasion) but the caveat is a loose tent is a damp tent in the morning.

Great buys! Bummer your store is closing. Love my Tilley too! Had it a whole two weeks! LOL It's the Green Air Flow model. To Don Rearic: Yes, the pocket will hold your money, your little Spydie,a scout fire steel and some tinder, and probably a flat Silva compass too!And it has a velco closure, unlike the military cap pockets that are open on the top.

Yep. mine has the same pocket my TH4 Hemp Tilley has.

I carry cash, emergency credit card, list of phone numbers and other goodies in there.

I love my tilley! To back up what everyone else is saying, You will not be dissapointed!

HEHE, LOL

Yep, yet another here with a Tilley. Probably the same model as you picked up: the T6 Airflo in khaki with the olive underbrim. Sweet hat, that is.

Anyone who makes fun of you is doing it out of jealousy.

Finally found a hat to fit your head? Does that mean that you have an extra large noggin, also? One of the best things about my Tilley is that it came in a size 8.

If you do indeed have a very large head, also try www.Bigheadhats.com. This is the only place I can get a large enough cap with my college team logo on it.

I love my Tilley too. :thumbup:Oddly enough my girlfriend seems to like it on me too, though I did go with an OD hemp version, not the slightly (IMHO) tackier version pictured above. =)

I love my tilley so much that I bought another one, now I have one to use it on the trails, and one to use it everywhere else. and the girlfriend also thinks I look good with it.
