Got my 1st Kurk today

Well today I came home from school and saw a triangular box on the step. I'm like oooo my kurk came and I went up to my room to open it. I tore through the tape and packaging and took it out. I was impressed, this thing was a beast. It was a 15in ang khola that I got on Yangdu's DOTD. It was really thick and had only a minor flaw or the handle and sheath nothing that would change it's preformance. The karda and charka seemed nice too, but the main blade and the little blade were both pretty dull. The sheath was nice and sturdy and everything fit nice and snug. So I take out my Spyderco Sharpmaker and head downstairs to sharpen them on the counter. I put a edge on it that wasn't the best but I was anxious to go out and play with my new toy! So I walk outside towards this little sections of woods and unsheath my kurk. I'm pretty excited and I take a swing at prolly a 2 inch sapling maybe a little bigger. I just kind of hit it sideways so it didn't cut through it. Then I try to cut more of a diagonal way and it takes a couple hits to get through. I then moved on to something smaller maybe a inch and I took it through with one sweep. Then I went onto something 3-4 inches with a harder wood then the other stuff I was cutting. It probably took me a minute or so to get through it. Then I went over to a smallish tree I felled a few weeks ago but never got to dragging it out. I deceided I would cut it into peices. It was to big to drag and it was against some other trees and brush. I started hacking away at it and it took maybe a few minutes to cut a section. I cut a few and headed back to my house. The tree was maybe 4-5 inches by the way. I took out my kurk again and started to chop the large peices of the tree. This took longer then it took when it was leaning up for me. It wasn't cutting super fast or anything so I deciedes I would try my wetterlings small hunter against it. I brought them both out and did some chopping. The wetterlings cut better then the kurk did and it was easier to cut when it was just lying on the floor. I went back inside and looked at the two tools. I thought hmmmm I really want to make this Ang Khola work. So I took out the sharpmaker and probably spent a good 20-30 minutes sharpening it and then testing it. I was just using the gray triangle side as the flat side was harder to use with the kurk. I got the part closer to the handle able to cut paper and then I tried the tip. I was a bit disapointed with my results, the part closer to the handle cut with more effort then I would have like the the tip just seemed to kinda drag/rip it's way across. I walked downstairs again and out to the garage and took out a peice of wood. I didn't get to test it against the small hatchet as it was getting dark but I did use the kurk a bit. The results did not alter much from the last use. I know the tipish part where the blade becomes wide is supposed to be cutting and my part of that is duller and I can't really get it sharp. I took it back in to try and cut paper again and then I took out a 12 dollar mora I sharpened myself and even though I sharpened it to a much finer setting it still was SO much easier to cut paper with. It didn't even need you to help it cut much it just sliced right through. It's not really a fair comparison since it has a 10 degress more acute angle and it's sharpened with all the rods. I was pretty disapointed with how the kurk was working for me and I figured I'd post here to get any advice. I really want this to work for me but it just isn't. I can't do freehand sharpening either so I have the sharpmaker and that's about it. Any advice would be very helpful.

Even the medium Spyderco rods are quite fine as far as abrasives go. Sharpening will take some time this way. Do you have anything coarser?

A good convex edge can be applied at minimal cost by using sandpaper backed with something that "gives." Mousepads work well. Similar things should as well.

A more traditional method is freehanding with a file. This actually works pretty well but it can be tricky if you've never done it before and aren't comfortable with freehanding. It should be noted though that by sharpening on a Sharpmaker, you're only one step removed from freehand sharpening.

Hello Dave, I have nothing courser the spyerco is it. I was trying to sharpen the kurk on it for a good amount of time I'll try some more. I didn't use the mouse pad method yet I tried to attach sand paper to the rods on my sharpmaker but it just rips I guess that is why you need something that will give. Well I'm down for a 3rd round with the sharpmaker. I'll let you know my results.

Well it's sharper now but not that sharp I'll to test it again tommorow. How sharp would you say a kurkri should be? Mine can cut paper now even though it's not that smooth but it can't push cut you have to like slice. Not really sure how sharp it should be so if you let me know I could try some other rods on the sharpmaker.

Alright thanks Jaiofspam I really should get one of those belt sanders for my "khuk". Does it take any skill to use a belt sanders or is it pretty easy?

most of my khuks can readily slice paper... but i think the major concern is not how sharp but how long the edge you put on will hold :)

i will let dave chime on in this one... he gave me some really good advice

Alright Jai I'm guessing you own several kurkri's yourself? How sharp should they be for chopping wood?

lol... couldnt really tell ya yet
i havnt done any real chopping with any of my khukuris :p
at this moment i am just an ogler  :D

im sure others will chime in :)

Alright Jai thanks for your input and someone will probably post by tommorow about the sharpness level. Tommorow I'm going to cabelas so I will have to hold off on testing it untill tommorow.

If it won't shave hair off your arm, it ain't sharp. :D Once you get it shaving sharp, you can generally keep it that way with the chakmak.

hmmmm iono... shaving sharp sure is fun when hairs pop off yer arms
but i dont think the edge will hold up well with heavy chopping...
forgot to ask but did you want a shaving edge or a utility edge

buy one of these along with belts from lee valley :D

ohhhh... and i'll be the first one to say it.
its "khuk" for khukuri not "kurk" ;) enjoy your ang khola :)

2 nights ago, insomnia sent me to the web at 2-3am... and i got that exact setup... from both those places,... how funny is that...
the next step is to setup some kind of ramped rest to get a 15* and 20* angle with the base perpendicluar (rathr then angle the base)... I figure that would be a nice ticket...

any advice on use of this toy-

Dan Koster might have some tutorials on how to sharpen a kuhk.
Search him out. and go to his web site.

Minipyro,

I'm new to all of this as well, and I had some of the same problems you did. What works well on a flat ground edge doesn't always apply to a convex grind like a khukri. Somebody posted this link a while ago:

http://home.nycap.rr.com/sosak/convex.htm

I read that and it started to make sense. Try getting some sanding sponges from the hardware store and starting with those. I have sponges with 100 and 150 grit. Work those for a while, and then use some duct tape to tape finer grit wet/dry sandpaper over the sponge. I've used up to 600 (pretty sure it's 600) and that will produce a very sharp edge. One tip that helped me with the sponges, is that you can move the sponge over the khukri -- you don't have to keep the sponge on the table and move the khuk. Good luck!

Dan is exempt as far as his tutorials are concerned.

BTW...Dan taught *me* how to sharpen khukuris on a belt grinder.

Alright thanks for all the links I'm going to go check them out. Last night I was using the sharpmaker for around a half a hour and it got sharper but I could probably get it sharped with those sand sponges. Those seem like a good idea I'll have to try those some time. Thanks for all the replies.
