Got my AR back from the shop

Mick and the crew at STRIDER knives took my AR in for some warranty service.

Problems fixed:

(1) Problem:Blade point rides high in closed position.
Conclusion: They did something so the tip is now lower when closed and can't catch fingers.

(2) Problem: Blade creeps open about 1/2 inch when closed lightly.
Conclusion: Problem solved, closes nice and easily. Blade seeks lowest position when closed automatically.

(3) Problem: Blade action is "halty". Opening and closing friction was too intense. Maybe the result of a warped washer? No doubt the same problem that contributed or caused problem#2.
Conclusion: Problem solved. Smooth opening and closing action, very easy on the thumb.

I believe the mechanical features such as the hinge, and liner had been replaced. I think the stop portion of the blade had been ground a bit deeper so that the blade would sit lower in the handle.

Speed, baby, lots of speed! I sent the AR in last Monday by FEDEX 2nd Day air. I recieved it today FEDEX 2nd Day air, one week to the day. I think the AR was in the shop for about 36 hours. Simply amazing.

What can I say? Thanks STRIDER! You guys rock. I love the knives, and the amazing postsale support.

BTW, this would have been posted on the "AR problem" thread that I started on the USN Strider forum. So Mick, if you could just convey the substance of this post to the thread there, I would greatly appreciated it. I believe some other guys have the same issue and was awaiting my results. Someone didn't want to risk border inspection when shipping so they wanted to make sure it was worth it. Tell em, I know that it most certainly is.

I would post this myself at the USN but Jonas Andersson, original member and moderator, in his infinite wisdom has chosen to cancel my account at USN for suspicion of being a "CONMAN". In a nutshell, Jonas chose to cancel my account absent any facts or even an actual charge against me. They are a bit spooked by the user named "navydude" who was passing off fake striders. So, they choose to ban me before I could do the same. Why?, I asked the same question and recieved no specific answer.

Stay sharp,

Hi Shane,

The AR is now my all purpose, every day carry knife. I doubt that I will find another to replace it's robust functionality. Looking forward to getting a SnG.

PS. Can't see the USN thread that I started. I am locked out pending the findings of their witchhunt, see first post ^.

Bummer - hope it works out in your favour! Anyway, this is what I posted "over there"...

Upon further examination, it appears that the copper pivot washers are becoming "pre-loaded" by whatever sticky stuff is between them and the liner. The stuff looks like contact cement, and has the same consistency.

When closing the blade slowly, this "stuff" allows the washers to rotate slightly with blade, but once the blade is closed, the washers still have some preload left in them from the sticky stuff, and actually cause the blade to open back up 1/2" or so, as the washers rotate backwards slightly because of this "stuff".

A quick close of the blade overcomes the stickiness, and the washers do not bind on the blade when closing, thus there is no preload and the blade remains closed.

What is the compound behind these washers?

And this is the response I got from Mick...

It’s 3m structural adhesive.
It should be flexible, but your bushings should not ‘pre-load’ either.
If they do, you may want to send your knife in for service.

We use the stuff to hold the liner side bushing in place. Because we want the knife to be symmetrical, we use it on both sides. The stuff is impervious to most chemicals and solvents, but occasionally someone will find something to break it down and we need to replace it.

I hope that the chemical compound will last for a long time. Don't want to be shipping the AR around every few months.

Mick, Sundsvall wrote that his blade now sits deeper in the handle. How did your service department do this?

Every time my AR has been in the shop it has come back much better than before. Can't wait to get it back this time!

Of the several hundred of these things we have made, we have heard of about five that have had an issue with the bushings.
I don’t think anyone needs to panic yet.

On all but one that have come back, the pivot tension was too tight; this is what was working against the adhesive.

Glad you’re happy with the results.

Mick

My favorit part about the AR and the STRIDER line is that it doesn't need or look like it should be babied. The knife looks like it functions and begs to be used as a tool instead of worshiped like an idol. Although, there is plenty of that going on anyway.

I think another member posted a thread basically saying the same thing. I have since sold off the knives that sit and do nothing so that I could buy and use this knife that is versatile enough for everything I do. However, it is a little large for carry with certain clothing, so I am waiting for the SnG...................
