I posted a while back about sending in a new Buck 301 because of some side to side play on a couple of the blades. I can't remember the exact date I sent it in, but I received it back today. I think it took 4 weeks or so. According to the packing slip, my knife was listed as “non-repairable”, so they replaced it with a new one. It came without a box, just wrapped. The main blade is stamped with the same date code as the original (2008), but the blade is a little different. Specifically, it is a little narrower, and the nail nick is much larger. The main blade on this one is tighter than the one I sent in. It has a very small amount of side to side movement (less than the one I sent in (or the second one I bought while waiting), but as I’ve posted previously if my limited experience is representative, then I think that this is common with the Buck 301, and not severe enough to be an issue for any but the most picky. Overall, I’m satisfied with the new knife, and I have no complaints.

Now for the interesting part. Along with the new knife was a second much older Buck 301. It is the older type with the long narrow nail nick and "BUCK MADE IN U.S.A" stamped on the tang. No date code that I can find. The other two blades are marked "BUCK". It is beat up with the scales worn mostly smooth, and all of the blades worn down by a lot of sharpening, and when opened it is obviously broken. The back spring is pushed down, and the left side scale is separating next to the blade. The main blade hangs down a little. On the box was written, “D-J Loose blade keepsake”. I guess Buck wanted to show me what a “loose blade” was really like:). Kinda neat though. This knife has a history, and it looks like someone put it to good use. I’ll add it to my basement collection.

Buck makes I nice knife.

It sounds like you were accidentally given someone's knife by mistake, and since it was labeled as a "keepsake", you might consider contacting Buck and helping get it to the right person.

I agree with Jeremiah's buddy - contact Buck/Joe Houser and arrange to return it to Buck. Someone is missing that, and I'm sure they would appreciate getting it back. ;)

...And somebody at Buck needs a touch of the whip... :grumpy:

Ah, I never thought of that. I'll give them a call when I get home this afternoon. That makes sense.

I put a call into Buck. After explaining the situation to an operator, she said "hold on". She then somewhat unexpectedly transferred me to the warranty department. I got "Tracy's" voicemail, and I am waiting for a call back.

Call back and ask for Joe...If the operator asks what you're calling about, tell her, "I want to know what he's going to do about my wife!!!"...That should get you connected... :D

Yeah, that might get someones attention.:)

Seriously, You did say contact Joe at the beginning. I guess I should have listened better. I didn't get a call back from Tracy.

You guys are hilarious...yes I bet you got someone else's knife by mistake. Many times when we can not repair we will send a replacement and just return the original. I will let Joe follow up on this one. Keepsakes are big deals so thanks for being up front on this one.

Okay, I'll wait to see if Mr. Houser responds to this thread. If not I'll try to call again next week.

you will likely hear from JOE on monday ..
he likes to chase critters in the "back yard"
if you hear from Joe this week end most likely
it is 'cause CJ took his bow from him...

i have gotten keep sakes back also,,,
it is a nice thing they do..
nice of you to return it..!!

So this is how you talk about me when I turn my back?:D

Doug,
If you would not mind sending it back, that would be great. We will reimburse your shipping of course. I am sure that Tracy has another message on her phone from someone asking for their favorite old 301.
Thankfully it is rare but sometimes the knives get mixed up out in the shop.
Sorry for the mistake.

Okay, will do. I'll send it back to the Buck warranty address tomorrow with a note explaining the situation. I'm not worried about being reimbursed for the shipping.
