the handles look as though they have severe buffing marks, or grind marks...is this acceptable or normal for asian horn handles? This is my first custom Buck.

Looks as that is the white that naturally occurs in the Buffalo horn,
unless it is rough around the edges where the lighter color is.

Those do look like the natural flaws in Buffalo Horn, but I'm suprised that they went ahead and used that piece and shipped it.

Your knife is severely flawed and of no value whatsoever. Send it to me immediately and I will donate it to some deserving person in a Third World country, such as, well, me, in Canada. Seriously, I don't think it is flawed at all, just adds character to a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, like natural scars on leather.

I can't tell from the pick.

If it's the same texture as the material around it then I would say it's just the natural horn color. That wouldn't bother me at all, it's natural.

However, if it is that color due to a poor buff job then I would probably send it back to get that corrected.

Odds are it's just the natural horn and adds character.

It looks like a loose layer of the horn was chipped off during the worm-groove-grinding...

I'd ask Joe's opinion...

From the pictures it looks like regular buffalo horn. It is common to find white streaks as it occures naturally in the horn. The ridges or grooves in the handles are put there on purpose...in case that is what you are refering to, to simulate impala horn.
I hope this helps.

What Joe said. Those handles are deliberately jigged, which I think is what you're referring to as grind marks. The horn was smooth when the buffalo (or whatever animal they belonged to) had them before you. :D The white streaks are natural. It looks nice to me. I have the same knife. You can get the same handle that is smooth....w/o the jigging.

wow...nice pics and a beautiful knife. I just bought a genuine Impala horn knife that has become my favorite handle ever. Enjoy!

If I can figure out pics--here it is

......Buck is putting jigging on Asian Water Buffalo horn to simulate Impala horn...but real Impala horn is available???

Does anyone else [besides me] think this is odd???

You know, I scanned this post, I thought you said:

...Water Buffalo horn to stimulate Impala horn...

Never mind!

from that picture...you can see what a good job Buck did jigging the handle!

Don't think Buck does the jigging. I talked to Joe H. about this when I ordered mine a couple years ago. If I remember correctly, pretty sure he said they get the horn already jigged.

Looks great....pretty sure that's also jigged.

Thats right, we purchase it pre-jigged. My guess, and it is just that, is that jigged buffalo horn is a lot more readily available than actual impala. I may be all wet on that but am pretty sure this is the case. I can tell you one thing for sure, buffalo horn is stanky when you grind on it! :barf:
We dont do the jig work but we do have to size it in to the handles.
