Just got my first Becker, a BK14. Started small as the price was right. What would you guys recommend next, thinking either the BK2(don't know if I need a 1/4" blade, but want is another thing) or a BK9. Here are some pics of the new addition and a quick wrap I put on it. Maybe put some scales on it and get a new sheath someday here.

Nice. Yeah there ain't much of a chance your only gonna end up with one. :)Wait until you get a 9,2,7,5. Got a 9 on friday and got BK2 week before that. Like the smaller ones but the larger models are the ones that really make me smile and prefer. 2 or 9 will be great choices for your next one.

You have a small one now you need a big one. Go for the 7 or 9. You can not, not have one.

A great blade, that 14. Use mine everyday since I got it. Gotta say, though, the 10 is a great "step-up" imho.

Will that BK14 fit into the side sheath of the BK9? Doesn't matter. Get the 9

I have one and it is a MONSTER!

You need a BK9. You can't not have a 9. If you own a BK9 you will be less appetizing to mosquitoes and your house will be 6% less likely to be hit by an meteorite. Also, legend has it that there is a mysterious doughnut shop deep in the woods that will give you a free apple fritter if you own a 9. And if you can find the place...

Congrats on the bk14. Its a sweet little knife. Had mine for about a month now and just today decided to strip the coating. Love it even more now! I keep hearing about the 9 and I know I gotta get one.. But consider the bk12 (RSK MKII) as well if your budget allows. Its my current fav fixed blade.

Hello there. I am glad i found a so interesting community. I am reading everything on here for weeks now. You people are amazing!

Onwards to my first post. I guess that's the best thread to post my question to. I am thinking of buying a BK14 for a friend to have as his "small" knife. I have heard some bad things about BK14's sheath, similar to BK2's old sheath (dulling the knife everytime you take it out). I can't find any more recources about the sheath, so i came here. Is there really an issue with the sheath? If there was an issue when BK14 was first produced, was the sheath replaced or improved?

And since we are on the "newcomer questions" subject, how is the 1095 Cro-Van steel doing with mud and river water (not sea/salt water). Is wiping it with some kind of mineral oil after sharpening enough?

Thanks a lot for your time and again i am glad i found your awesome community.

Hey Tsambo.....

The 14 is a great little knife.......... The sheath "problem" could never be duplicated at the factory but, there was a change in materials just in case we were missing something....... The CroVan is best treated like most other carbon steels and after time in muddy water a rinse and dry and a bit of Vaseline or mineral oil will give it protection.....

I hope to have your business and look forward to hearing your impressions........

Thank you for interest in my blades......

Ethan

Thank you mister Becker for your response. You definitely (will) have my bussiness - a BK2 or BK7 for me in the near future and a BK14 for my friend in the following days. The real question in my mind that i am trying to answer is if i need to also buy a sheath along with the BK14 or not. I guess i got my answer from the best source.

The sheath issue has been hashed and rehashed here, there are lots of references to it around here. Even if the you had to toss the sheath and get a new one right off the bat, the knife is so good it would be worth it.

I have a BK9 which I have removed the coating from. Once I used it to remove a branch from a swimming hole and it took a dunk in the river. Now, I never bother with oiling my blades, even the naked ones and the BK9 is no exception. The bare steel got wet and I merely wiped it off on a dry part of my shirt and stuck it back in my custom kydex sheath. When I removed it a little while later I noticed a little bit of moisture in the sheath and on the blade but I didn't worry about it. Anyway, that uncoated knife that I have never taken any care with at all has never rusted at all. I don't clean it or oil it or anything other than sharpen it and so far have not had any problems. It is worth mentioning though that I live in a fairly dry climate and rust isn't much of a concern here. A more humid region might be different.

Thanks a lot for the info about corrosion. Really appreciated. I suppose then that using vaseline will just make it immune to corrosion for life. Since i am here, let me leave this.

Warning: Literally mindless abuse of a poor Eskabar by a crazy Russian. I warned you.

Spoiler: Eskabar is a total beast, making it's bigger brothers proud. I am shocked! I personally thoroughly enjoyed the abuse...
