Got my first Busse, questions...

I have a ASH-1LE. I've had it awhile but it hasn't seen much use. Not sharp enough when I got it, honing on a 6000 grit water stone seemed to help. But I still can't get it sharp enough near the tip, suggestions? Also seems like the bevel is rough and grainy as opposed to the smooth and shiny bevels I've seen on other Busse's.

I also need a sheath. What seems to be the consensus on the best maker for Busse? I think I want a kydex but if there is a leather one that's best that's fine.

I also noticed that if I run my finger down the side of the blade I feel a ridge at one point that runs from spine to edge. What's that about?

In order to smooth out the edge you will have to start with a grit much lower then 6000. Say around, 80. and then work your way up.

that's a little low . . . .
i think 300-400 would be a good starting point for smoothing. 80 would be more for heavy reprofiling.

as for good kydex, mashed cat is my favorite. okuden is also excellent. here's an ASH SE in mashed cat

I recently picked up my 1st Busse which is an ASH-1 and found it to have the same edge you are talking about. It had a bit of a wire edge and as you said a little rough / grainy looking. I ran it on the Spyderco ceramic bench stones I have and it cleaned up pretty well.

As far as a sheath goes I had this one made by a great sheathmaker I know named Vince Peloza. I am very happy with the way it turned out.

I use a 600 grit ceramic steel and a loaded strop for normal sharpening. My favorite and most unobtrusive method.:D The grain lines will strop-out in time...if that's bothering you, I couldn't tell.

Working it on my water stones seems to have polished the rough grain out of the bevel, mostly anyway. There are some spots that are really giving me a hard time, but overall its' good. INFI really requires some pressure to remove metal.
