Got my first case knife and......

Now I am obsessed with slipjoints and traditional knives. All I've ever been interested in was locking knives, "tactical" folders and fixed blades. Ever since I got this mini trapper for Christmas my tastes have changed a lot. There is just something beautiful about the simple functionality of a slipjoint.

The mini trapper I got changed my whole outlook on carrying knives. I used to carry a 4 inch locking folder (spyderco military), but now that I got this case knife I feel like it's unnecessary. Now I know what all the fuss is about.

Also, I love how easy cases' CV steel is to sharpen. Just a few minutes on the sharpmaker with the UF rods got both blades hair whittling sharp.

I'm looking at getting a sodbuster next, but I don't particularly like the graphics on the blade. Can you get the sodbuster without all the writing on the blade? Thanks guys!

Just a quick check on Sodbusters - it seems both the yeller CV and yeller SS Sodbuster Jrs are clean, but both the black SS large and SS Jr are etched. The large blue SS Sodbuster seems to be clean also.

Ok great! I want the yellow one so it's great that it's sterile. All the pictures I've seen of the sodbusters (which isn't many) have had the markings on the blade.

Thanks!

Poking around a bit more, sometimes the yellow Sodbuster Jrs have had etching too -- I don't think the current production does, but someone should be able to weigh in on that with some more authority soon.

I have basically all the case soddies and the yellow CV can be bought with no etch. All the black handles have etching. The blue is no etch. The stag, red, and green all have etching. Hope that helps.

I have three yellows, they all look like this:

Welcome to the traditional world, Shooter. If you like the mini trapper, maybe you should try a peanut? Available in a choice of scales and CV. But be warned, the peanut is one of the most addictive patterns there are.

You best be careful. In modern one hand openers every knife design is different though maybe similar to someone else's. For instance if you like Griptilians, then you buy from Benchmade and the variety is limited. However, in traditional patterns you will find that several different makers/manufacturers build the same pattern. This opens up a bewildering, at times, array of choices. Throw in the various handle materials and such, you can wind up with a lot of knives in just one pattern without duplicating any knife.

It makes for great variety and choices. The mini-trapper you bought is a great pocket knife. But other manufacturers make the same or similar pattern. You might easily be tempted to pick one or more of them up as a comparison or just an addition. Then you are well on your way to traditional knife knutness with the rest of us. I know you are going to like that knife; it's one of my favs. Enjoy your visits here and when you get those new traditionals, drop in and show them to us.

I think maybe in the modern one-hand world a Sebenza is the knife to own for "membership in the fraternity"; here in traditionals, it might be a Case Sway Back jack in CV and Chestnut bone. (I hope they never quit making that one.)

Anyway, welcome aboard!

Ed

Yup, listen to Ed.

All the same pattern, all different, and the collection no where near complete.

Hi Crimson Tide Shooter
What kind of handles did you get on your new knife? Have you given any thought to whether or not to you are gonna force a patina? I did not put one on my Trapper and had problems with rust until I used my knife to cut up some Chinese food and didnt wipe it off good.

There's only one problem with having a mini-trapper, a peanut, and a sodbuster (Jr. in particular). They all carry so darn well and work so good you have a terrible time trying to figure out which one to carry and you hate to leave any of them behind.

Welcome to the addiction.

I think there are a lot of us that started out with slip joints when we were younger, then strayed a little as things changed.
Some still have and enjoy other styles of knives as well as modern folders, but the slip joints offer so much more IMHO...

When you hold a slip joint, it has character and personality, and for me it takes me back to a time when things were simpler. Every time I hold one, it reminds me of my gramps who passed away 5 years ago, at the age of 94.

He always had a slip joint on him, and after he passed I got his. I take them out once in awhile just for the memories.

IMHO, you couldn't have picked a better pattern to start with. I've owned many Case mini trappers, and after getting my first, I knew right then it was going to be one of my favorites.

The MT carries well, feels terrific in hand, has the simplicity of two blades, thinks its a bigger knife than it really is, and it has half stops.... Did I mention I really like them :D

I have the yellow handles (bone?). I haven't forced a patina yet but I do have some staining from food prep on the clip point (?) blade.

I like these 2 bladed case knives because I can use one blade for the hard cutting, then keep the other (probably the Spey) really sharp for more precise cutting.

Your yellow scaled Trapper, should have Delrin scales if its CV steel. Case does make some jigged yellow bones knives, but they are only available in SS...

I've preferred the simplicity of two blade knives for quite some time. Only recently have I given the Sheepsfoot blade in a Stockman a fair chance, and it is really growing on me. Maybe the reason I never really used it was because I get set in my ways, and resist change :D

Thats another great thing about slip joints, so many options

Pretty much what I've always done both on trappers, and on my two bladed folding hunters. I keep the clip blade as a general purpose cutter and keep the second blade, spey on the trapper and the skinner on the hunter, as my fine work blades. Usually did the same with the smaller blade on my SAKs. I'll sometimes even sharpen the second blade to a tighter angle, around 15 degrees to be used as my "scalpel."

Recently though, I just keep em both to the same angle and only pull out the second blade for fine cutting.

Just so you know, in the fine tradition of good folk, we're really helpful at helping our fellows spend their money! :D You just have to show your appreciation at our helpfulness by posting picks of what we helped you spend your money on. ;)

You've caught a horrible disease I used to be like you were and used to want one-handed tactical everything but as I matured as a person and a knife enthusiast I began to gravitate towards more traditional patterns I dunno why but for me it's just so nostalgic because I'm carrying somthing like my dad or grandpa carried and also I feel it's more practical carrying a multi-bladed knife pattern like a stockman or a trapper it's like carrying 2 or 3 knives in one Hey in a few months time my edc went from a zt 200 to a buck 301.
