Hello guys, I just wanted to ask your opinion on something. Just got my first couple stainless Case knives, a stockman and mid hunter. Both made in 2008. How does Case's recent stainless compare to say Leatherman's 420HC or Buck's 420HC? Are we talking in the same ballpark for edge retention ect? I have been happy with both of those less-than-super steels, so wondered how Case's stacks up. I will say the Cases both take a great edge on my crock sticks, just wonder how long it will last.

I would say that the edge holding of Case's "Tru-sharp" is roughly equivalent to Buck's 420HC, and maybe a little better than Leatherman's. Leatherman's steel may be a bit tougher- I think they run it a bit softer than Case or Buck does. Tru-sharp is a perfectly acceptable user steel, and as you've mentioned, sharpens up nicely. I like Case's stainless (though I like their CV even more). Great scores!

I have heard that Buck does a fairly hard heat treat on their 420 HC. Their edge should last longer than Case. Case TS is pretty good stuff for edc use.

God Bless

I think the Buck 420HC holds and edge a little better than the Case True Sharp. But for me the case SS True Sharp get the sharpest edge of all my 62 folder of various steels.

Buck 420HC actually takes a keener edge then both Tru-sharp and CV, and it holds it better too. However, that is not to doscount Case TS. Very good steel for every day use me thinks.

Thanks for the input guys, that sounds good, sounds like the Tru Sharp is at least in the same ballpark. I figured I couldn't go wrong for the prices I paid, $20 range each for the mid hunter in Red pocket worn bone WITHOUT the pocket clip this model often has, and the Autumn barn board stockman. I have a Canoe in 1095 and its great, but there are so many nice Case knives in Tru Sharp, it makes it hard to avoid it, but sounds like there is no need to, at least for my EDC needs.
