Yesterday I decided to stop at a local knife store (actually the only local knife store) and pick up something new, I decided a an Emerson mini roadhouse. I had been eyeing them up for a while now and really liked the design. It's a great knife an the perfect edc size for me, my only issue is it came dull easily the dullest new knife iv ever purchased. Is this normal or did one slip thre the cracks?

It has a hard time slicing threw 1" webbing it won't slice paper. I don't know how to better define it but it's duller than even my cheapest spyderco came. I'm no stranger to sharpening my own knives but usually I need to use them first.

Definitely a mistake then, they are very sharp typically, in a toothy way. Just got a CQC-8BT back that needed a new stop bar, and had EKI sharpen it. VERY sharp indeed.

First thing I did was break out the strop but it didn't help much I'm going to work on the edge some and see if I can get it sharp enough.

ok.
Do know that EKI has you covered.
I never had a dull Emerson out of the box but these things happen.

the custom cqc8 i got Last week shaves hair - although it had been in its box since september 2012 unused - from what i can tell by inspecting the surfaces probably never even opened before

i have unused mt scarabs that were shaving sharp which lost their initial sharpness After Some years of Storage...

btw the custom 8 bit my Index Finger yesterday - so i guess its really Mine now?!

Congrats on the new blade! The mini RH is one of my favorites.

Bummer it wasn't sharp. I've only seen one that wasn't screaming sharp out of the box.

Tried to sharpen it up the, tip got nice and sharp but the belly of the blade looks like it's kind of thick? Like the way the light shines right of the edge doesn't look right. Guess I'll just have to put more time into it.

Hello and congrats on the purchase! I personally have had a Mini A-100 that wasn't sharp like you have described. I have also received my ETAK-A with a section of about 1-1/2" duller than a wooden spoon from EKI directly. I have sharpened my own knives since a teenager so no big deal to me. If it really bugs you, EKI will take care of it since it was purchased new.

My local knife store offers a sharpening service, and whenever I go there (or buy a knife there) I bring a knife or two that were dull from new, and have them hit it with their paper wheel.

I've had my CRK 25 micarta, ZT 0560 satin and ZT0560 BW, which were all purchased new there, touched up from the start and then maintained with my Sharpmaker from there on.

Works well for me, you might consider that practice. They can sharpen them as well as sending them somewhere to get a good initial edge. And a three-minute wait!

I was thinking about doing something like that if I can find someone local here that won't butcher the knife. I'm fine with maintaining an edge but apparently I'm not so great with putting the initial edge on. Iv also never dealt with an a-symmetric edge before.

Don't let the asymmetrical edge bother you, it's actually easier to sharpen than a standard v ground edge because you only have to sharpen one side o the blade then strop the back side.

That said the roadhouse is a little different with the belly it has. I've got a RH that needs to be touched up and I keep putting it off just because the belly on that knife takes me a little longer than other knives.
