WOW !! on Tuesday evening I progressed from the "vegetarian" phase of hunting to the phase of Real Hunter.

Used the SOG Bowie to gut him. And I'm embarassed to say I didn't have as much "sharp" on the blade as I thought I did. Pig skin is just downright tough to cut and the Bowie didn't have as much "sharp" as I would have liked.

I used the SOG Bowie and Tech I and Tigershark to skin him. I used the Bowie's sharpening stone to add some sharp on occasion which helped, but the edge didn't seem to stay very long. Don't know if it was my technique or just the toughness of the hide.
The Tech I was marvelously sharp !! It was like I imagine a scalpel would be. The hide just peeled back oh-so-easily, but even the Tech I lost some edge.
The Tigershark..... what a knife !! I used it to behead the pig and remove the four feet. Easily accomplished, bones are no match for the mighty Tigershark.

Cheers,

Carl

NPH, I have ran into similar things like this before, there is sharp and then there is "Razor sharp". I would not worry too much about this, each blade IMO has it's own place, and it looks like you found a place for all of these knives. I have heard that pig skin in one of the toughest things you can cut, and really is hard on a good edge.

I got home Thursday from hunting and last night I re-sharpened all the SOG's, they are plenty sharp now. And I'll add a large stone and maybe even a steel to my checklist.

Need to start planning my next hunting trip !!

Cheers,

Carl

Congrats Carl on your first carnivorous hunt - first's always taste so sweet.
Any pics to share !!

Hey Carl, nice catch! :) Thanks for sharing the story with us. from what I've heared Hog skins are really tough because there is lots of sand and dirt in their hides from rolling in the mud and dirt so much. And it's Murder on any edge. Glad you enjoyed the hunt.

Got any pics for us? :D

it's quite amazing..... my hunting mentor Tim is of course insanely jealous because he wasn't there to coach me along, I was 100% solo on the hunting trip. He's naturally proud (and even a little surprised) that I was able to get the job done, what with me being a city-boy flatlander all my life.

But I must admit I did the unthinkable and "left home without it" .... "it" being a double-check of SOG sharpness. The Bowie just wasn't as sharp as I thought it was, how embarassing. Fortunately the Tech I and Tigershark were as sharp as I expected them to be.

As for pictures, I just took the film in yesterday to be developed. I don't have the technology to post 'em, but another Forum member can help me out with that in the near future.

Cheers,

Carl
