I received a NIB Small Sebenza 21 S35VN with double thumb studs today. The workmanship certainly lives up to its reputation! I was surprised, however, at how difficult it is to open one-handed. Is this normal, and does it ease up with use?

Thanks!
Ira

Make sure your fingers are not pressing on the lockbar. If you've never played with a seb before it's a common mistake.

Congrats on your purchase. Yes, it does get smoother. If you want to get a nice feel, take it apart add a bit of grease between the washers and the scales. There are vidz on the forums if you're hesitant. But don't expect the "flick open" motion of a Hinderer or a Strider. It's more of a hydraulic feel.

Thanks all for the quick replies!

The action is extremely smooth, which is the primary reason I 'graduated' from 40+ Spydies to the Sebenza.

I think I am applying pressure to the lock bar. I'll practice more to prevent do this.

Thanks again!
Ira

I had some issues opening my first Sebenza, Ira, and I finally landed on using my thumbnail. I know some other folks use the same technique.

My initial frustrations were completely resolved once I adopted that method. YMMV.

also make sure you're pushing the thumb stud out, then up, not straight up. i never had a problem opening mine up, but others who have handled it usually push on the lockbar. i hold it by the outside of the bar, or by the clip.

congrats on your 1st seb.

Congrats on acquiring the Sebenza. It truly is a knife worth owing and like everyone else has stated, it will become easy to open in short order and be very smooth.

U need to exercise you thumbs to stenghten it ;) Welcome to the family:thumbup:

say goodbye to your bank account, kid's college fund, marriage etc... welcome to the CRK club.

Congrats! I've purchased 4 lg Sebenzas and 3 are butter smooth. One is still as stiff as the day I bought it - STIFF. If I ever send it in for a spa treatment, lockbar adjustment will be on my list to check.

They're a joy to open. I have to fight the urge to open & close mine for no reason! :D

Fight the urge?! I moved up to a Sebenza to do that all the time, and enjoy the pure smoothness of the knife! :-D

I thought I might be the only one, yeah right, each night when I empty my pockets I have to open and close it at least once. Congrats.

Is it strange to go to sleep with a sebenza next to your pillow?
Probably not the safest stuffed animal substitue :p

I don't think so. Awhile back, my wife changed our sheets and later in the day, she asked why there was a giant knife under my pillow (a Spyderco military). :)
