This knife replaces a Khukri I can't sharpen, a Garand bayonet I can't sharpen, another Khukri I can't sharpen, and should have its useful life lived out in camping situations or for general cutting of stuff around the house.
It arrived from Cabelas in its very plain-looking box. I took it out and the dull black finish on the handle and blade keep the plain look going. If the light hits the edge just right, you can see a whisker-thin arc of unblacked steel curve up and towards the spine. It's fully equipped with a very plain black leather sheath with a belt loop.
I figured I was in for a half-hour on the Sharpmaker to put an edge on it. A couple minutes slicing up junk mail convinced me that I don't really need to sharpen it. I thought my kitchen knives were sharp, but this one is just great. It came right out of the box as the 2nd sharpest knife in the house. I haven't seen a whole lot of love for the Ka Bar on this forum so I was a little apprehensive about the quality but it looks and feels very solid.
I got the plainest one they make, no army insignia and no marine corps insignia and nothing written on the blade. Also got the blade w/o serrations. I have a folder with serrations that lives in my front right pocket so that should take care of cutting the odd piece of rope or a seat belt.
It's a good size for me and fits my hand well for the purposes of slicing slivers of paper off the junk mail that came today. If I get another $50 rattling around in my wallet with nothing to do, I might pick up another plain one with the leather-wrapped handle.
It was the same price as a Kershaw JYDII, btw.
Thumbs up for the KA BAR.
