A big thanks to Pendentive for the Kagas Katne he graciously gave me for being close guesser on the birth of his bouncing baby boy. Hope all is well with you and your growing family.

It came in the mail today and I tore into the package. Cool looking piece. I like the looks of it a lot and think I just might need a Khukri in the 8-9" range (any suggestions).

One thing about it that I am kind of confused about is the edge. I have read some older threads around here and people talk about using the Kagas Katne as an actual knife. I would love to do this but the one that came to me had no sharpened edge to speak of. Can it indeed take and edge if I wanted to sharpen it (I do!)? If so, what is the best angle edge to give it. Thanks again everyone. Back to admiring my new toy.

Congrats on your winning guess.

And congrats to Pendentive on his growing family.

You are welcome. The mother and baby are doing just fine.

shappa = Thanks!

one2gofst = mine came with near-shaving edge on it. I was pleasantly surprised. I do think that putting an aggressive edge on it would be fun and not too difficult.

I've actually cut a lot more than paper with my Kagas so far. Boxes, fruit, leather, etc. Mine came kinda dingy, but after a little cleaning, it's great now!

A khukuri in the 8-9" range = I posted a thread where I came up with several designs in the 12" range. Yvsa and Bill make a good case that the smaller (under 12") Khukuris won't make a good profit. I agree with them that it's a limited niche market. Though, now it looks like it has one more taker...you! :D:D

My favorite part of the Kagas is the sheath. It makes all the difference. I can't believe that Bill only charges $10 for this setup. I would have gladly paid $15-20 (psst...don't tell Bill!):D.

Thanks Rob!

one2gofst = now that I think about it, my bulldog villager came dull as a doorstop. I need to put an edge on it, and soon.

Although.... consider this:

A while back, I took a 24" machete and sank it into a 6" tree. It went in about 2 inches.

I pulled the machete out, turned it around and whacked the same tree (higher up) with the spine - sank it in almost as far! (about 1 3/4")

I did this several times on the same poor tree to verify the results and each time the blade only outsank the spine by 1/4"-1/2". Of course, that was with a 1/8" machete blade, not a 1/2" thick Khukuri...:D:D

We have a pair of them. They were sharp when we got 'em and still are. Neat. Horn handles, typical fantastic HI quality.

We use them for letter openers, kitchen knives and sometimes steak knives. And for opening long khuk boxes.

I can understand that the kamis don't want to make them because you get a hand made knife, mirror finish and a hand made sheath for $10!

Really should cost at least twice that.

:cool: :) :D

If we raise the price and the pay we'll get better quality. Kagas katne means "paper cutter" and most that come out of Nepal will do that and not much more but BirGorkha has that "they might need to use it for real work" philosophy.

Perhaps BG would be happy to know some of the torture that I have put mine through..:D Perhaps later this week I'll put up a full test & review. Should be fun!

I'm glad.
I have one next to the stove that I use for a paring knife.
I did take the edge off the blade up to the bend--
lets me hold the knife more comfortably.

Congratulations on your baby Pendentive!
I actually got 4 kagas Katne recently. Makes good graduation gift for my sword/kukri loving friends:D I did try the hardness out and the blade seem kind of soft. I have a spyderco knife and I could fairly easily scratch the Kagas Katnes. Originally, I wanted to try etching out a harmon line using apple cider vinegar by experimenting with a kagas katne. Now I'm not sure if these guys are tempered like the big ones. They're really nicely made. Some of the horn handles have white streaks running through them that looks very nice.

A lot depends on which kamis get stuck with the job. Some do it better than others. I doubt that Sher puts a lot of effort into the kagas katnes he makes.

Uncle Bill
Any chance you can order some Kimothoda or fancy Kagas Katnes? Makes good mothersday gifts and good for girl friend who jealous of my Kuks. No she doesn't want them, she just think I pay too much attention to those scary looking things... That is until she saw the cute looking Kagas Katne
:)

Mine is made of horn and looks great (see the baby pic in the contest thread).

Hope to see more in the future. Although, now that I have this information, I will definitely have them shipped to me first! Then, I'll pick out the good ones for gifts. :D

Bill = Thanks again!
