Got my little Sirupati back

A little 12" Sirupati, my very first HI khukuri, and it's mine once more. I had given it to one of my guys back in July before we rolled out, and the knucklehead left it at home because he, "didn't want it to get messed up". I could have probably just asked for it back, but that's not my way, so I traded him a Benchmade Nimravus for it.

What a sweet little khuk, horn handled and beautifully made by Kumar, with a clearly discernible temper line. The knucklehead had dropped it butt first on concrete, chipping a divot out of the top point of the butt (so much for not "messing it up"). Not to worry, a couple hours spent carefully filing, sanding, and polishing, had the handle looking good as new, and it now fits my hand snug without "biting".

The little Siru is definitely not the same workhorse as my stout hearted bulldog of a Pen Knife, but it does have it's charm, and it will earn it's keep. Besides, it was my first HI khuk. Think I'd ever give it away again? Don't bet on it.

Welcome home and thank you for a job well done!

I too have a 12" Sirupati and it just feels right. My only problem is the "biting" handle. How do reduce the top spur without messing up the looks??

Sirupati handle mod;

Carefully remove what's getting in the way, then polish what's left to perfection.

Seriously though, I used a file and sandpaper to bring the upper handle down until I'd blended the damaged with the undamaged. Looking at the butt plate end on, it now has more of a tear drop shape. Looking at the handle from the side, the butt is obviously no longer symetrical, but not at all unattractive. The feel is much more comfortable and secure. Work slow and careful, you'll know when you've got it right by the feel. Good luck.

Thanks, I know the question was a bit "thick" but I've never modified horn before. It's good to know it can be done with my limited skills and tools!

SharpBits:

Just checking to be sure: the buttplate is a flat plate of sheet brass right? NOT the "shop one" type with a 1/4 to 3/8ths side section soldered on and floral type chasing or coined along the side?

Alright, long as it's sheet brass barely smooth it. Kinda egg shaped, more rounded top than bottom. Doesn't have to have much done - just blur the tips a bit instead of being sharply pointed. Fine steel wool finishes it off nice and soft to the touch of the skin. In fact just smoothiing it with steel wool may do the job.

Far as that goes, I've got a wood handled AK that had a chip off the bottom point about 3/8ths deep and 1/2 wide knocked off. ( $60 BLEM! ) Still waiting to find something to glue and shape to fit it's place.

It gets worse Bruise, I still have to e-mail Uncle and ask him to ship the 15" AK I ordered while still in Afghanistan. Hey, it was a blem, and it was calling out to me, honest............

How about one of the teeth that Bill was selling? Of course, they won't be signed, but what an HI insignia!!!
