Well mine showed up tonight. Very neat knife.

Much lighter than I expected. Chops great. Need to get to know it better. I like it but don't think my 9 is in any danger of being bumped out of the number 1 spot.

The coating came off very easy.

For me, the BK4 will probably see more use than the BK9. It just feels better in my hand. I usually use my 9 for wood processing and bushcraft stuff, and I think the 4 just feels better for that. I haven't convexed my 4 yet, and I think I'll like it even more after I do that this weekend.

For combat, however, I'd probably choose the 9, but that's not really an issue for me.

They are almost the same length. The 9 is maybe a 1/4 inch longer.

my machax examples are all just a touch longer than the BK9 actually. mmm.

the BK9 weights more. heavier.

the BK4 is faster for snap cuts, which one will have to learn to be effective.

Maybe its the way I am comparing them, don't know. Its kind of weird because of the curved blade vs the straight one. They are so close to the same but the 9 seems a touch longer to me.

Here are a couple pics where I tried to accurately compare the length.

This one I put the flat ends against the box. BK 9 seems just a little longer.

This one I straightened out the BK4 and only the edge was touching the box. They seem more equal like this.

align on forward bolt, and rotate?

heck, take them apart, screw together on forward bolt, describe arcs of each (sketch). mmMMmm.

You sound a tad disappointed B. Maus. Is it not what you hoped for?

Nah, not disappointed. Its a great knife and I feel like its worth the money no doubt. I think I was expecting it to wow me a little more and give me a harder time choosing between it and my 9. I also didn't have much time to use it. I spent 15 minutes going back and forth between it and my 9, batoning and chopping a log. They seemed pretty equal.

I have always been a Bowie or Machete guy and this is my first time ever using a Kukri type blade of any kind so perhaps with more time I will understand all this has to offer.

OK here they are screwed together. The Machax is a little longer this way. But the edge goes a little further back on the 9.

I love the 9 did not get a chance to give the machax much use but it did chop good using the snap cut. I think this is a knife that will grow on me.

Didnt expect that coating to come off so easily...Guess Ka-Bar are trying to use up the old powder coating paint quickly and this is coated with the remaining stuff. Nice pics B.

Yeah... That coating issue is ridiculous. I think I'm going to start a thread called "Why cut corners on the coating"? J/k.

Seriously though... Calling your sloppy seconds "limited editions" and selling them to your biggest fans? Yeah, I know you know we're going to strip it anyway, but at least be upfront about it. I can't stand Cold Steal... But at least they call their seconds, seconds. (ALL their knives are seconds, IMO).

After the SMKW stuff and now this...I'm glad I waited. You see little stuff, and you can't help but wonder if bigger things like heat treat are botched. I'm only buying stuff available to the public that I know passed QC.

They aren't "using up the powder coat". The original kabar stuff and some other lines are keeping the powder coat. I believe only Becker and JAB are getting the new texture coat.

nobody uses the tip. consider a "detuned" operation :)
