Had my eye on one in a knife shop in southern maine and when I found out how rare they are I had to grab it. Had one of my crew grab it and bring it north today. There is some side to side blade play that none of my kershaws exibit.
Seem the frame lock is not going over far enough to lock it. If you push the frame bar a little further in the play vanishes but it is gritty and a little rough to disengage. wd'ed it and blew it out and lightly rem oiled it and it got a tiny bit better. Will this break in on it's own or should I talk to Kershaw about it? I am concerned as when I have spent this kind of cash on other knives they usually lock up like a vault.
Any advice would be appreciated. Russ:( It is the zdp 189 Ti model by the way...

I know how hard it is to send off a new knife, but since it is a TIZDP, I would echo J's comment above. Contact them at 800-325-2891, ask for Dawn, and tell her your problems. She'll fix you right up!

And VERY nice snag on the TIZDP MC!

Thanks for the advice gentlemen,
Kinda a bummer as I just got it yesterday. Any idea on their turn around time? I guess I will call the nice lady on monday and set the wheels in motion. Think it will go to Krein after I get to play with it, want it to be a light saber.
Thanks,
Russ

2-3 weeks. I got mine back in less than 2 weeks because I sent it in via Priority Mail...from the best I can tell, they get worked on within a day of when they show up and sent right back out.

Fastest warranty service Ive gotten from any cutlery or firearm company.

mycough, before you send it in, have you checked the tightness of the pivot? I've looked at all my MC TIZDP's and none exhibit this problem. A simple tweak of the pivot screw could fix this. As for the gritty, what you have done has helped, but is the problem still there?

Is it possible you could post close up pics of the lock-up (blade tang and TI framelock)? We might be able to work thru this without having to ship the knife off.

I am embarassed to admit it but posting pics is beyond me. I live so far in the sticks that I drove 62 miles each way to get a T8 torx bit, which gave me an excuse to have a good sushi feed.
Upon getting home I flushed the knife again w/ WD40 and blew it out w/ canned air. Then I lightly oiled it and tightened the pivot. Most of the play went away but there is a tiny bit still evident, perhaps like or slightly less than one of my automatic Daltons. If you just barely push on the Ti locking bar to seat it a tad further all play vanishes.
Do you think that it will "break in" so that the bar will eventually seat in that tightly locked position? It is really locked up well with that tiny ammount of pressure, similar to my mini skirmish or ZT 301.
Any further feedback from you kershaw gurus would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
russ:confused:

The blade should lock up tightly with no horizontal blade play from a normal opening. Having to push the lock bar further to stop the play means the knife needs some adjustments. You said you got a Torx to fit the pivot (and mealed on sushi - I'm jealous!) and you tightened it a bit and it helped. Sounds to me like it still needs some tweaking.

There is a trick I use sometimes, this might help you. Tighten the pivot until the knife is extremely difficult to open and the SpeedSafe doesn't work properly (the blade won't fully deploy). Then push the flipper to get the blade partially open, and slowly loosen the pivot in very small increments until the SpeedSafe takes over and opens the blade. That is the tightest you can get the pivot and still have the SpeedSafe work properly. You shouldn't have any horizontal blade play at that point, and the blade should fire open. If you still have play, I'd call Kershaw Monday and make arrangements to send it off.

I hope this helps some...
