Today the mailperson came and I got my new Bark River Northstar from Derrick at knives ship free. I got the one with the sheephorn scales. Absolutely beautiful blade, I'm very happy with it. I even ordered my wife the Bark River kitchen knife. I was told a couple weeks ago that I should not store any fixed blade in its leather sheath. I'm planning on keeping my northstar in my car or at least around the house. Does anyone have any bad experience keeping their Barkies in the leather sheath? I want the Northstar ready to use but if I have to keep the knife separate from the sheath that kind of defeats the purpose. Comments?

Hehehe congrats Scott Dog!

I "store" all my Barkies in homemade leather sheaths....."store" being the operative word. They're not there for long-term storage, each is either carried and used or at least unsheathed quite often. My new Northstar is slumbering (as I type) in its BRKT sharpshooter sheath - only because I haven't yet made a new one for it. I haven't had a single problem.

I believe, however, that blades, expecially high-carbon non-stainless, shouldn;t be stored (long term) in leather sheaths.

I have never had a problem with keeping them in the leather sheath. Just keep an eye on the blade and there should not be any problem. ENojy the new toy, I am sure you will have more before too long.

I haven't had any bad experiences yet, been keeping my barkies in their original leather sheaths, A2 carbon knives. A few Mora carbon blades in homemade leather sheaths also. Not one sign of rust to be found. I like to think it's because they get used so often:D
Hey Scott Dog, let's get busy with the camera, the sheep horn sounds delicious:)

If you have the knife out and are using it frequently, you probably won't have a problem.

But if there's any kind of humidity or moisture around, the leather absorbs moisture, and holds it against the steel - leading to rust.

You might try just keeping the blade slightly oiled to prevent rust.

Here's a pic.

Thanks for the compliments! Very nice knife, after handling it I'm thinking maybe I don't need a Bravo after all.

Congrats, that is a sweet one. I really like the sheepshorn scales.

Looks like a great knife! I'm not a lawyer, but I live in California. You said you might keep it in the car. Just watch the concealed "carry" statutes in this crazy state... it being a sheath knife and all...

Drider:
Point well taken, Northstar will not be always in my car. Only maybe when I go camping or go to outdoor functions. I always have a large Sebenza in my left pocket. Being a folder it is not de facto considered a concealed weapon (and it's clipped to my pocket) because it isn't ready to use and it isn't a gravity knife or a switchblade so I feel pretty safe with it.

Stretch:
I'm sure you are right, I see a Bravo in my future. I just don't know if I want to go fancy or just do the green micarta. Or maybe I'll wait and get a sheephorn one. I doubt it would be more expensive than the Northstar. But the bone stag looks good too. I'll have to see how much I have in my paypal acct.

Interesting thread! But you are fooling yourself if you think that ONE Bark River is enough! One a MONTH maybe...
I've been wondering about knife storage too, it's said that they should not be kept in the sheath because of rust or chemicals from the sheath. BUT...it's impractical and even dangerous storing unsheathed knives! Most of mine are stainless and the A2 and D2 I have are all cleaned and dried then I add a drop of Rust Away and back in the sheath it goes. No problems so far.Maybe it's wrong though...

Willgoy,
What you could do for long-term storage is store them like BRKT sends them: blade oiled and protected by a small piece of posterboard (or any light, thin cardboard) covering the entire blade.

Another potential problem of storing knives in pouch-style sheaths is that the sheaths can stretch out and get a little loose. If you only use the sheath when carrying the knife, it will stay more snug.

I wish the sheath on one of my Bark rive Nebulas WOULD stretch out a little:eek:It's annoyingly tight, means it's really a struggle to draw the knife! OK I won't drop it but it's actually dangerous as brute force is needed to get the knife out:eek:

Any remedies for expanding it a bit??

So today I put in an order for a Bravo 1 with full Sheep Horn scales. Delivery end of November.;):D

You could use warm water and stretch it a little with a larger object. I like them tight....I mean tight like yours is. Problem with BRKT sheaths is, usually, only a small portion of the handle sticks out of the sheath. I like the majority of the handle (3/4) sticking out. SO I want the sheath to grip the scales very tightly.

That full Big Horn Sheep bravo will be sweet. ALL of the ones made thus far have had a micarta bolster so that they would fit the standard Kydex. I have been trying to get them to do one like this for a while--I am excited to see it.

Leather rather than Kydex--SWEET!
