I don't remember seeing this in any of the pictures. There is a cutout at the bottom-side of the tang above the choil that is blackened. I don't know why it's there for or why it's that color. It runs all the way to parallel with the pivot under the handle. MY only guess is that it allows room for the lock to engage closed, but why is it dark? it looks kinda ugly. I also wish the clip had been resized. The hole at the top that goes over the pivot pin is too large for this knife and looks misplaced. Other than that the knife is great. Fits my hand well, feels even more solid than the Military. It's nice to finally have all the great attributes of the Military in a Delica size. AND I LOVE THE SPYDERBUG NEXT TO THE THUMBHOLE!!!! I suggested that Spyderco use their logo more prominantly a long time ago. Did this by any chance happen by my recommendation?
