Business charged me $100 for the job, but nice and straight. Sharped up and it did the job on my vintage leather.

Then it started ripping it up again. Another sharpen and worked fine for a little bit

However. After it ripped up about $20 worth of leather, it hit me.

Too much strain on the leather pulling it through the tool and today I tried piggybacking the leather on top of another stronger leather.

The bottom leather was just there to add support and reduce any strain on the top leather and it worked great. Shaved a sample piece down to 1 mm and not even a tiny crack in the material.

Just wish I thought of this earlier and saved some leather

Don, glad you had some success, but it still remains that the leather in question is old and degraded to some extent and it is not going to get better. The fact that it will not pull through on its own without tearing is your first big clue.

What is it they say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results???

Hi Paul,

It's true the leather is old, but it's still being used by many artisans. Look up Metta Catharina leather.

Cleverly in the UK make $4000 shoes from it. Others making wallets, briefcases, gun cases etc. and these items are not cheap

The flaw may be the pattern in the leather which weakens the top material. I have another new material with a pattern on the face and it also has problems with the splitter.

Maybe I am insane, but I get $150 for a strap, so not going to toss the leather. That would be insane

Thanks

DON
