Got my Vic Scientist

I've always wanted a Vic Scientist, of course due to the interesting posts about it (UnknownVT started the madness) and so I took the plunge after some fits and starts.

I highly recommend purchasing from Tim (Felinevet) because his website under sosak seems to find these rare models, and because he was courteous and quick in helping me make the transaction. No glitches at all.

Observations: Looks about as thick as my Compact. This model has the pin in it aside from the toothpick, tweezers and ballpen. In-line philips! woohoo!

My last big find was a red alox pioneer, ordered from an internet site (Lighters Galore Plus). It must have been the last one in stock because it seemed to take some time to get it (I imagine they were scouring their stock), but by gum, it arrived. It had '97 inscribed on its blade base! Later, the price went up and the red alox model was no longer an option in the website. I really appreciated their professional service.

The red pioneer appeared to have slightly discolored oil(?) on it, maybe due to its age, but it was NIB. This Scientist also is NIB and looks spanking new, actually.

Excuse me while I get back to admiring it...:D

You get a white Scientist? I just got one from Tim earlier this week. He's good to deal with and will definitely purchase from him now on even though I do IT/Web design work for a local law enforcement supply company that can get a limited variety of Victorinox products. I've never made a purchase from him before then but have sold him some discontinued models that I found on a closeout at a Walmart last year. He had the white scaled Scientist models that were new in the box. I got it strictly because it is a rare/discontinued model to go with my other two Yoeamans (the real deal)...One I found at a local gun/knife show and the other I found at a local Boy Scout store.

I went conservative and got a red one. Tim told me there were only red and black ones available, so it took some thought because black is cool too.

But, I figured that since it's rare for me to make such a purchase I might as well go classic.

Now, a white scientist - that's very cool. Scientists wear white lab coats, so why not the same for the scientist model? Seriously, that's a nice, unique color for the scales (any pics?)

Some time back, I wanted to get a scientist or yeoman. So I thought I might have a better chance of finding a Yeoman because it was offered by the boy scouts. I tried scouring the local stores (hardware, feed/farm equipment shop), and finally thought I came across one over the internet. It turned out to be the 4 layer explorer model (which is nice in its own right), but no joy. What's worse, the place I ordered it from never (I mean never) returned any calls or email from me asking why it was taking so long to ship. It was a little scary, but after a long time it finally arrived, and of course, not the yeoman I wanted.

So, where was I? congrats on scoring a white scientist, and everybody get ahold of one before it becomes scarce again!

I noticed that after I received the white Scientist, Tim had some other scale colors available as well. I would have rather had a different color I guess but I was thinking along the same lines...white lab coat/scientist. No big deal though...I can always change the scales to a different color. It will never be carried but if it was, color would be an issue.

If you can find a Boy Scout store, they might actually have some real Yoemans in stock. The store I went to had several...I checked them all out and got the one that appeared to have the least scratches on the scales. They were new but I've found that some scales on new ones can have a few minor blemishes from the hard plastic inside the boxes...not bad if they were shipped from Switzerland in that box! There have been numerous reports of people ordering Yoemans and winding up with Explorers...while you are actually getting more knife for the money...it's still not what you wanted.

I'll take some pics of the White Scientist later and put them up here and on SOSAK

I have a NIB "original" Yeoman (not Explorer) that I could part with - check with FelineVet Tim first (gotta help those kitties!).

Thanks Tim. I am happy with my scientist, but there are probably a lot out there who would be interested in a NIB Yeoman (and helping the felines at the same time)

No problem. Again, if FelineVet Tim has some for sale, that's where you should buy first, but if not, then mine is up on eBay now ay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=009&item=190016547734

Wow, this is my lucky day. I have been looking for both the Scientist and Yeoman for some time and to find each one day after the other, and new as well! I purchased a Scientist from Tim FelineVet yesterday (he told me he did not have any Yeomans) and now I just purchased this Yeoman. Thank you Tim & Tim. Now just have to hide next months statements from the wife......

You're welcome! I have one more that I'll put up on eBay some day, and then that'll be the end of my spare Yeomen. I try to be careful not to offer them when FelineVet has them available.

John, let me know if you want a pair of Plus Scales to change out on your Scientist. If so, I will send you a pair N/C. Just let me know if you want red, black or blue.

I really appreciate that Tim. It is actually harder for me to find Original Yeoman (Yeomen?) than Scientists.

One thing I don't like about Vic's marketing is their re-use of model names (Yeoman, Golfer, etc.). Never, I mean never, trust a photo of the Yeoman to indicate that is what you'll get. Almost universally I have found that they will be Explorer Pluses. It seems the dealers don't even take the time to check or stay up to date and use the same photo of the original Yeoman. As an aside, I am an authorized Vic dealer and a couple of years ago I ordered 10 "Yeoman" thinking that surely Vic would have it right. Well, good news, bad news. I did get 3 real Yeoman (no BSA seal) but the rest were Explorer Pluses.

I went to the official Swiss Army store in NY and ordered one (as they had none in stock) and when I went to pick it up found that it was an Explorer Plus with the BSA logo. The salespeople in the shop were confused as to why I was not happy with it. They didn't see a difference and I had to explain it to them.

How about posting side-by-side photos of the Scientist, Yeoman, and Explorer Plus?

I didn't purchase the Explorer Plus because it was not what I had ordered.

Here's my attempt to post pictures.
Explorer plus, note extra layer with: can opener and bottle opener;

The last image was from http://www.smartknives.com/, a good reference for SAK specs and pictures.

What a day! Both my Scientist and Yeoman arrived this morning. If anyone is interested I can try to put up some pics later if I can remember where my hosting service is.

Once again, thank you Tim & Tim for really making my day.

Thanks for the pics! I didn't know if I had a Scientist or a Yeoman in the sheath pocket of my BK7, but now I know it's a Yeoman.
