The only benefit of driving to the inlaws for Thanksgiving is that I can stop at the Bass Pro in Manteca on the way. I went in specifically to find .45 ACP and 9mm, to no avail. But as I perused the knife selection, I spotted the Vantage series, so I asked to look at the Pro and Avid. I gave in to temptation and walked out with the Pro.
The overall blade grind is well done, with the minor gripe that the point could have been finished better. But it has a great high hollow grind with a thin edge (thinner than my TNT and Waimea, about the same as my CS 110, and only a little thicker than my Cabelas AG crosslock). It looks like it will be a good performer. The fit and finish is decent. I looked over three of them; two had centering problems when closed (one almost touched the scales) and all three had good lockup, although one of them had the lockbar moving 3/4 of the way across the tang. I picked one with slight centering problems but with the lockup at less than halfway across the tang. The action is smooth and it feels really solid.
And the best news - Bass Pro is letting these go for $44.95. This is a real deal at that price!
