Well, I got my leather, letter opener, amaranth handles, Fix-It, and boot clips from Texas knifemakers supply today. How do i put the belt clips on the sheaths? The amaranth scales look pretty cool for the letter opener and they are purplish, and my brothers school colors were purple and gold.

On the downside, my other order still hasn't arrived. I ordered a belt sander and some other stuff from ahrbor freight on the 21st of may and it was shipped the 23. Well, last thurs, I got one box, but the sander itself is still MIA. I called on it and it was shipped from the same place and same time. They said if it didnt come by tomorrow, to give them a call. I have the bad feeling that it was lost in the mail. Oh well, at least I have the new stuff to play with and the hand files are looking better and better!

Wear a good respirator when sanding Purpleheart,it can cause nausea in some people. Also if you want a deeper purple color sand it to the finished size and expose it to U.V. light(sunlight)for a couple of days. Then put your finish coat on it.It will still darken with age but this gives it a head start.

I darken Purple heart on my knives by Going over them with a propane torch set with as small a flame as I can get. You have to be careful not to stay in one place too long.
If your slabs are thick enough and you use a small flame you won't have to woory about shrinkage in the wood.

I'd probobly try using the sunlight thing first though.

Good luck

Thanks for the ideas, guys! Will that Fix-It sealer stuff from Texas knifemakers supply darken it? does it work w/o a buffing wheel, ie if I sand it or something? I will definetly try the sunlight thing; right now, it doesn't look very purple, its very very light. Instead of burning it, can I throw it in the oven for a while? The blade is already epoxying, so I dont think I can cook it too much. It is a letter opener blade, so it doesnt have an edge anyway.

Well, i also journeyed (read fell) into the sheath making arena, too. I made 2, but only one is functional. The first one was bad planning and too little thinking on my part. The second one came out pretty good. I got the boot clips from Texas KM Suppliers, the small ones. I just drilled/cut a hole for the bump to go in and that was it. I drilled the holes with a hand drill and used an old braided leather belt that had broken. the contrast of black on light brown is pretty nice and matches well with the handle I have. Oh well, time for bed!
