A Sharpmaker that is. Arrived in the mail today and have been using it quite a while. Phew...my hands are tired! I mounted it to a piece of oak and clamped that to my desk. Seems to work a little better, as I don't have to hold it.

I was able to get hair shaving sharp, a lockblade from ColdSteel in VG-1 stainless. Next I tried my brand new Rat-7, but try as I might, I couldn't get the whole blade hair splitting sharp. I could get it from the finger guard up about 3 inches. From that point to the tip I just couldn't seem to get it that sharp.

What am I doing wrong? Do I just really need to remove a lot more steel before I can get it there? Its 1095 steel not D2.

Overall I'm pretty happy with my purchase, but my hand sure is tired!

Thoughts?....

angle might be different passing through the curve in the belly, you'll probably have to recut the bevel with coarser abrasives before refining on the SM.
