Got Snow?

Been a year for snow, what are you doing in the snow?

So, is that your dog, the snowball catching champ ? :D and how's his throw? ... and is that your construction in the background? Today I just picked up a hitchhiker on his way to town, blowing on his bare hands at -8C ... and he said he had been shingling a roof. Polite, introduced himself. Frankie.

I don't wish outside winter work on anyone here in my climate, yet it is work for some and I understand that.

We have had a couple of weeks of steady -25C to -30C overnights where the woodburner could simply not keep up and some pipes froze. Wearing layers inside. Plenty of snow here in pics has come and gone and will come again. 6 times the lane has been cleared. Three days of rain in there and it was like a summer island breeze.

Right now it is easy going though cold. Dealing with the cold and snow is just as usual. Makes me cherish the seed packets just received in the mail from the nursery. Plotting and planning for the strengthening sunshine every day. Seasons in Canada are treasured by me (though maybe not by all ;))

Yes he likes catching snowballs, likes catching anything. He's usually not more than 2' from me.
And yes that's construction in the background, hobby work, I'm retired and bored so I built tiny houses. I build 3 each summer, keeps me busy and makes a little coin.
As far as snow, we haven't had much to speak of this year.
I'm a Canadian living in the mountains of northern Arizona at 7600'. Only had a dusting this year (maybe 6") so I was longing for some snow pics, stories, etc
Thanks for the pics !!!

Impressive, both a catcher and a connoisseur of, if not possessive of, slippers ... loyal indeed. Looks very youthful in this pic but same white forepaws.

What is the market for tiny houses, if I may be so bold as to ask?

By market, if you mean clients, they range from 24 to 76 years old. If you mean $ , again a wide range, last one I sold $32,500, cheapest one $17,500, most expensive $48,000.
Pic of the dog was first day him and I met Someone tossed him on the road, I picked him up, put him next to me on the seat, been there since

My sense has always been, and remains time tested true ... a pup tossed by others makes one of the best companions of a lifetime. Absolutely. Awesome deed and I see you are enjoying the rewards of kindness and will do so over many years you and your dog have ahead of you.

Very interesting about the tiny houses. I just moved to a very small house and had scaled down to accommodate the move ... and I can't say enough about the freedom from stuff and lack of maintenance that I now enjoy. Still downscaling and appreciating how a small space forces decisions about what's important in daily life. Very little material stuff apparently

We have just decided to put our 3000 sq ft for sale and downsize. We're thinking of getting lower in elevation and going 1000 sq ft. Just finished plans.
The dog, he's a keeper, I had lost my pup of 17 years a week prior to "finding" him so you might think I saved him, but I'm not so sure who saved who. Where I go, he goes.

Beautiful Shuswap ... living in a postcard with amazing snow dogs :)

I ask does this 1,000 sq ft. total or is there a basement that doubles the usable living space?

I went from an 1,100 sq ft home plus same size full basement (so 2,200 total) and a 40' X 28' shop with kayak & canoe on waterfront and utility trailers and other equipment to a 22'X22' depression era home with slanty roof loft over the original half only (sloped roof addition on side) ... so to a home just under 800 sq ft. of living space total. No basement. To manage over winter I have stored some things under a tarp shed 10 x 20 ft but will definitely not want this snow maintenance to continue after this winter. I have a lot of hobbies that include tools - sharp and otherwise - hence my membership here on BF.

Honestly, this process has been both a challenge and a relief ... lightening the load of stuff as opposed to what I will use or appreciate. I look around now and take great pleasure in knowing exactly what I have and so glad to be rid of what I will not use. Absolutely not one regret. Goodbye stuff - have a good life with someone else!

Still a little sentimental about some things that I will offer to the children ... only if they want it ... otherwise I will do the final removal and know that I have saved them a lot of heart-tugging decision making that truly should not matter to them.

The freedom from things, it is sweet.

And yeah, it is always hard to know who saves whom in the dog/person thing. We think that way and likely dogs do not ... so I must conclude that they save us ... they think they are in it for the full belly and scritches behind the ears - but we know better.

Yeah, every winter when the snow comes they get freaked out when the grass vanishes and they have to hit the head. Then come spring they freak out because there's no snow to take a dump on.

Well we had snow, should have had 5-6 foot min by now. Guess you have to have a winter to have snow, forecast here (northern Arizona 7600 ft elv ) mid 60's , sunny and clear.
Snow, no snow, my wife says , what's the difference, you complain either way.

I find those tiny houses extremely interesting. I believe that I could live in one easily (with a shed), but I think I would want 2x6 exterior walls for added insulation space and possible plumbing. But of course I know that most of the plumbing comes up from down below.

So far, we have only had a dusting (<1") of snow here at the house. I like snow but I would just assume visit it rather than live in it. I feel the same way about Wyoming basins.... okay to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Been really cold for here in December and parts of January. I had flowers blooming on my front porch until Thanksgiving and then the sub-20 degree weather hit.

I'm always up for tiny house talk, I'm getting r-21 with 2x4 construction. The one I'm working on currently has no plumbing in the walls, a centrally located water heater with the kit sink, shower, and bath sink in a row lets you use interior hidden supply lines only. Drain lines are in floor, all 6' of it
2x6floor/roof

The tiny houses pretty much use trailer type designs. I don't much care for trailers/mobile homes.... not so much for what they are but just how they are built. Improve the construction and they would be just fine for me. Some trailers use 2x2 exterior walls (most don't)... they look pretty, but the construction sucks as far as I'm concerned. We'll see what the future holds for living accomodations.
