A gentleman had these for sale on CL the other day. It was a take one take all proposition. Since I didn't have a double bit ax I took them. Even though the axes are rough.

There were a couple from China and one from the USA. This one didn't have a name on it (that I could find), it does have a small 7 in the center and the eye has offset parallel ridges on each side running vertically.

I don't have a splitting maul either so I plan on hanging this also. It has the name Warwood or Harwood or something like that on it and I think the number 8.

I'll start looking for handles tomorrow. This will be my first try at this, so advice is welcome :)

they all look good to me. a little work on the wire wheel should clean them up.

then comes the hunt for handles.

all good

I finished reshaping the head (just a little) and sanding the rust off and polishing it a bit. I gave it a coat of black Krylon and hung it on a decent hickory handle. If I had it to do over I would have sharpened it before I hung it but it turned out OK. I took it out and tried it for about 10 minutes. It is not profiled for chopping wood but it works well if you split the wood on the first chop, otherwise it binds up and is a pain to get out. I cut through several knots and the edge holds well.

Oh, I forgot to ask what is this pattern called?

Looks like either a Michigan or Western pattern.

If you use the 'twist' method of splitting your axe will almost never get stuck. Hard to say why it's not chopping well. It should. What's the edge profile look like? It should look like this.
