I have stuck out locally so I may have to look at ebay etc and I really don't know what's what as far as the vintage stuff goes and would love some advice on where and what to buy .
This all started when I was going to buy a Council Velvicut but decided I would rather have a project for fun..

I do make knives and have a 2hp 2x72 grinder HT kiln etc so I have the tools I just need to figure out what to start with and not over pay.
For now my heart is set on a Hudson Bay or Boys axe as a keeper but I would love one of everything ;)

You could find something you like in this Boys Axe thread, and look for one of those.

I think that most axe restorers are opportunists that grab whatever rusty vintage American axe head they find in the $5-$10 range at yard sales or flea markets (as long as it meets certain criteria like not too much abuse). More money is paid for desirable models like Connecticuts, or embossed heads, or pristine condition, etc.

Thanks for the link ...
I'll just keep looking around I know there around here..

I'd start with any American axe on ebay under $20. Research the maker, pattern etc. Then take it one axe at a time. You can't really go wrong with any of the vintage makers; Collins (older), Kelly, Mann are all good go-tos. Like Steve said just try and find one that's not terribly beat up. I look for good bit shape, undamaged/deformed eyes, and polls that aren't too mushroomed.
