Got the Spydie bug, not sure what to do

I can feel a Spyderco coming on, just not sure which one.

I pretty much have it narrowed down to a Manix 2 XL and a Yojumbo.

I do practice FMA and I do carry a knife with SD in mind. I also have a great deal of respect for Michael Janich's input and am naturally inclined to believe he is on to something (with the Wharncliffe) if he says he is. However, a couple things: (1) The Yojimbo is small. So I am drawn the the scaled up version. No length restrictions where I live, I like blades hovering around 4". (2) While the knife would be carried with SD in mind, it will serve some EDC so is that point acute enough to be fragile?

Enter the Manix 2 XL. Seems like it would be almost as effective a fighting blade but with a little more durability for any cutting tasks that are pushing the limits.

A friend loaned me a counterfeit Yojimbo (that was pretty accurate). I hated how the hole was partially obstructed by the scale (same on legit version) but that wouldn't be the case on the Yojumbo.

The Yojumbo gives me tip down or tip up options, while the Manix 2 XL does not. I like options but also think I would like the fidget factor of the cage ball lock (is it really as sticky as some complain tho?).

So..... what do you guys think? Especially those of you that have both.

Also, I wouldn't be opposed to keeping an Izzie II for utility and the Yojumbo pocketed for SD but the Izzie isn't exactly a tank, so not sure how much I would gain there.

A PM2 would be nice.... if it was longer.

I have the Manix 2 XL. I have EDCd it for about 2 years. I dont think you will be disappointed in the least, its a tank. My only complaint is how hard the S30V is to resharpen.

If you're carrying for SD, and you train in SD, why not a fixed blade?

I say get the Spyderco Ronin 2. I think in such close quarters an inch or two will not make much difference.

Oh trust me, that Ronin 2 has teetered on the edge of my cart, many times :D

Truth is - I have many task specific FB's. Kind of trying to focus on folders, for a minute. Yes I am of that old mindset - "if it ain't fixed, it must be broken" but I am also a sucker for the lazy convenience.

I think I am leaning towards the Yojumbo. Figure as long as I don't mind 2 knifing it..... keep the AD10 in the back pocket for any heavy chores, Yojumbo up front for "work".

Do either of the two Spydies I mentioned open any easier than the other? I figured the tip up tip down option would give the edge to the Yojumbo just because how personalized the draw method could be.

Of the two knives you listed, I have handled neither of them. But I have handled multiple Manixes (regular size) and PM2s (compression lock) so I think the Yojumbo would draw better. The Manix is great for work but honestly the Yojumbo was designed with SD in mind so I'd say get that.

Military?!?

...As soon as I read your thread title, I thought why not put it on your keychain, Lol :D
Anyway, I can't really comment on the Yojim, or
jumbos, and the Military suggestion for liking the PM2, but wanting longer makes perfect sense.
I would really like to get a Canis in hand personally,
but limited funds :(
-There's the Karambit option, but I'm sure you've
already thought of that.
Good Luck on your Spydie quest :thumbsup:
B.T.B.

When I wanted a big Spyderco I bought the Military in S110V first. The Native Chief in Rex 45 will be my second big blade as soon as it becomes available.
After that I will see. I don't need a tactical knife and I already have a Swayback and GB2 with hollow grinds and a Caribbean SE in sheepfoot.

For a dedicated large SD folder Yojumbo is your answer.
For a large EDC that can be used in a SD situation Manix 2 XL is the better option.

I had a yojimbo.
The hole is useless. I always did the wrist flick, which due to the blade weight distribution and lock type worked perfectly.

I sold it. I hate hollow grinds in use.

I also hated the manix. The ball lock isn't comparable to the BM. The spring is a lot stiffer and the lock requires a totally different method for one handed closing. The biggest issue I had was the weight, though.

The pm2 is better in every way unless you are looking for a knife you can mistreat regularly. Better blade for cutting, hole is perfect for fast deployment, light, better lock, better handle.

See, this is one thing that had me jaktup - that ball lock is NOT na Axis lock and I heard it wasn't as pleasant to use. I love the Axis lock, had the first one ever offered (710 McHenry and Williams). While I have a small pile of BM's (sounds gross), I refuse to buy anymore (ideology differences). But.... the impossible dream - an Able lock with a 4" Wharncliffe. I asked Hogue to do it, doubt they will.

I have looked at the Canis. Ooooooh, thats pretty. The fragile tip on the Jumbo is freaking me out. Even in a SD situation - zippers, snaps, belt buckles, etc.

The more I search, the further I get from certainty. Muh head is in a spin.

I don't have a Yojumbo but I do have a Yojimbo and an XL Mannix.

I can shake open the ball lock no problems. I also have no problems thumb flicking open the Yojimbo. I would say it opens way faster.

But yeah that super pointy tip. You're going to ding it someday soon. I did mine and I got it OK with the groove on the sharpmaker but I'm always going to know what I did. The Canis has the advantage of being able to look at the older knife and evolve.

Take a look at the ZT0452.

It kicked my spydercos out of my right hand pocket from the day it came home. Plus it's on bearings, has a good blade for defensive use, and IMHO better quality build.

I still love my PM2 and enduras, great knives. But the zt0452 is one of those knives that I am unsure I will ever find a superior option to replace it.
