OK, I have been spending a lot of time focusing on my Buck 110 collection lately, but I am feeling the urge for something new, more modern that I have never owned. Going to a Gun & Knifeshow in my home town tomorrow, and will have about 60-70 dollars to spend.

What would you folks recommend I look at that fits these specs.?

4.5-5 inch closed 8-9 open folder (hey I like 'em big!)
PLAIN edge
lightweight synthetic handles

I'm thinking Benchmade, Spyderco or Cold Steel?? or if someone knows of another brand??

Ideas?

The Benchmade 551 Griptilian would be an excellent choice.

Spydercos are nice. Why not save up for another $60 or so and get a para-military? That's my dream knife.

I've looked at them over the years, and the blade style on them is not one I like.

Anyone have any experience with the Wayne Goddard Spyderco?

How about a KaBar Mule? I've been using one around the farm for the last month, and it has proven to be a tough and reliable tool.

That one is actually on my "paln to look for to check out" list for the show, it does look like a nice user!

I am leaning towards a full size Griptillian, I have a mini and while it's really nice it's a little to small for me. Wish I could afford the s30v Ritter Griptillian, that thing looks perfect.

These might fit the bill
Cold Steel Voyager with 4 or 5 inch blade
Cold Steel Recon
Benchmade Ambush (aluminum handles, though)
Spyderco Wayne Goddard

The Goddard is the best fit. It is light weight, the blade is great for small to medium cutting chores; a definite working knife. My only complaint with the Goddard is the mediocre pocketclip, it's too loose to the knife in place, but that's just my own opinion. Others have noted no problems with the Goddard.

Just got a Goddard from New Graham the other day, and it's a decent knife indeed... Nothing fancy, just a slim handle (don't have it in front of me right now to measure, but I'd say it's probably about 3/16" thick) and a solid blade. The handle is nice and long even though it's skinny, so if that's what you're after, check it out.

Well I'm back fromt the show, think I found a good one, one of the dealers I've bought from before has along about 50 Benchmades of different types that he was liquidating for another dealer, I got a NIB Ares 735 with green and black G10 scales for $70.00. I wasn;t sure if that was a good price, but searched the net when I got home and it seems to be???

It's one slick knife that for sure!

Congrats on the 735!

To correct my earlier post: The Goddard isn't quite that thin... it's more like half an inch thick... but it sure seems slim because it's so long.

Kabar also makes a Maserin (Ithink I spelled that right) line of folders, not sure about the price but I saw one a the last gun show I went to and they seem like real nice knives, also maybe look for Kabar Doziers.
