And she seems to like it so far. I'll give my impressions if she ever lets me have a turn ;)

Congrats on the gadget dude!
The ipod is an interesting toy to have around!

I have a Neo Jukebox. It has a 20 GB drive, compared to the ipod's 5, and doesn't need a mac or proprietary software.

I actually wanted to get the 30GB mStation for about the same money, but it's for her and she is an Apple nut. I think she just wanted to make her friends at work jealous.

She said the set-up was as simple as all her Apple stuff, she had everything already on her computer loaded in about half an hour and spent the rest of the morning loading songs from her CD collection. She's flying across the country right now, so at least she's getting good use of the 10 hour battery time. She is happy with the sound quality of the unit and headphones and says it is easy to use, so she is very happy with it so far. And a happy wife makes a happy jimmy!

They are awesome, stjames! An ipod and itunes is so far ahead of anyone else's solution it's unreal. My son's and I put all of our cd collections on our computers via itunes. 7 days, fifteen hours, two minutes and 36 seconds right now. My initial "A" list is 1 day, twenty hours, thirty eight minutes and eleven seconds long! It is so easy to burn cd's with this program. I went to Fry's Electronics and picked up an excellent set of Cambridge Soundworks speaker/subwoofer system for $20.00. You gotta here the drums and highs through these! They beat anything from Harmon/Kardon or Altec. For only $20.00! My wish is for Apple or someone to get together with the Audio Manuf. industry, and come up with a standard protocol to talk to Stereo systems. I'd love to be able to program a dvd/cd jukebox on my system with various playlists for music, movies, etc. I don't want to sit in front of my cpu to enjoy music,
I want to program my entertainment center to do it. i want my entertainment center on the wire just like a printer and be able to be accessed by my cpu.

Hank

HankS, thanks for the feedback. CPU access for the home entertainment system sounds good to me, as well! I'll have to check out the Cambridge speaker set up, for $20 they sound like a good accessory for the iPod.

BTW, how much memory does your 7 odd days of mp3's take up? Thanks again.

I've used 15.86gb of space on my hard drive. These are mp3's done with variable bit rate. That gives me just about the best quality sound with compression of file size. It's about 1/6th to 1/7th the size of the straight aiff file from the music cd.

Hank:cool:

I had (note past tense) a 20 GB Nomad Jukebox. Compared to the iPod, it is quantity, not quality. The iPod is small, elegant, and has a responsive user interface. The Nomad has 20 GB. Easy choice, at least for me.

I use the iPod almost always with headphones (Etymotic ER-4 and a Headroom headphone amp), generally use my laptop when in a fixed location. The problem is hauling decent speakers--if I'm on a long trip I will drag along a Cambridge model 12 speaker system--that's the one that packs up into its own case (case is the subwoofer).

Hank, thanks for the figures. mp3 storage is the way to go for music, I would say.

Steve, thanks for the feedback, a friendly interface is key. If she can't use it easily she won't use it, and then it's a complete waste of money. I think 1000 songs at a time should keep her busy :)
