Gotta ask: Urban or UKPK?

Got an email from an online knife store promoting the Urban in foliage green, so I have to ask: If one were inclined to buy a "slipit" type knife, would the Urban be better than the UKPK or not? I like both, but ....

Same/similar clip (good thing).

Urban is G-10 handle, VG-10 steel.
UKPK is G-10 handle, CPM-S30V steel.

Urban blade length 2 9/16"
UKPK blade length 2 15/16"

Urban made in Seki City
UKPK made in Golden

Both cost roughly the same.

Thoughts?

UKPK: blade length 2 15/16" (74mm)
cutting edge 2 5/8" (67mm)

Urban: blade length 2 9/16" (65 mm)
cutting edge 2 1/4" (57 mm )

Urban pros: - Small and light( 2.05 ounces) vs 2.4 ounces for UKPK
- Handle is a half inch shorter than the ukpk

UKPK pros: - better steel in some people's opinion (S30v)
- more cutting edge if you want it

There are other things too, but those are the basics. I would get both, then if you want an exceptionally light knife, you take the urban, if you want a little more cutting power take the ukpk.

The Urban also comes in two blade shapes:

Orange handle: wharncliffe
foliage handle: leaf-shaped.

I like the wharncliffe.

I have an orange UKPK. It's nice enough, but doesn't really do much for me (Maybe because it is so similar to the Caly 3?), and I rarely carry it. The orange Wharncliffe Urban is a different story. It is close to the ideal small Spyder for me, and has rapidly become one of my favorites.

YMMV

Yes if you're allowed to carry locking blades where you live just get the caly 3. The urban wharnie is pretty cool looking though.

Me = Urban.
You = Tell me what you get. :D

Well, I had been debating Caly3 vs. UKPK. Same knife basically, only difference being the absence of a lock, which might be a good idea here in Nanny York. However, the Urban gives me an idea:

Perhaps I'll grab the Caly3 AND then eventually the Urban, this way I have a lockback for when I need one and also a slipit for when I'm concerned about NYC gravity knife law bullcrap. That seems like a good idea, until the next knife store promotional email I get ..... :o

I currently have a UKPK and Caly3.

The UKPK feels and performs nicer in every way. There are just so many little things that add up to make Golden knives a lot better in the end.

I would still like to get an Urban soon, but, if I had to choose just one, I'd go with the UKPK.

UKPK, I love that knife. I've held it, but never owned one. It's made in the USA, with s30v steel. It's really nice.

PV29---I hear you!
Good luck. Whichever Spyder you decide on, you can't go wrong.

UKPK Made in U.S.A. Same price, more blade.
The wonderful shape of the UKPK gives most of the benefits of a wharncliffe anyways.

Get both!

The Wharnie urban looks cool, but I really love the ergo's of the CalyIII so I would have to choose the UKPK.

I have never held a UKPK, what is so much more desirable about them over the caly 3 other than being made in the US and having S30V sttel? It seems people like them more than their caly, but why?

The absence of the lock and the full stainless liners makes the UKPK much lighter and slightly thinner. it disappears in the pocket. Also it has a 20lb. slipjoint in it, so you don't really need the lock.

That and it has superior blade steel.

Also the ergos on the UKPK fit my hand perfectly, so if the Urban has shorter handles then, atleast for me, it loses out in that department as well.

Seeing that I haven't held the Urban yet, I can't say for sure though.

I asked myself this same question, I really like the orange urban, but the UKPK seems like a great knife.

I decided to go with Caly 3 CF/ZDP :D
