Gotta get a new mat ...

As I wrote in another thread, I'm off to a scouts camp this weekend.
Originally I had two mats: one yoga mat that was very short, and one regular length mat for camping. I knew I had to throw one out cause it was badly damaged, but that's been quite some time ago, so I hoped it was the short one.

Found the remaining mat yesterday - and - of course it is the short one.

Now I am undecided - before I had those two, I had a very lightweight thin mat with aluminum foil. I loved it, as it was lightweight and warm and just 2 millimetres of foam, so it disappeared in the pack as well.

But you know, one gets older ... I wonder should I add weight and bulk for added comfort. Or do I just take the short yoga mat with me on those longer trips where I might need more comfort ...

Well, I'm really undecided ... what do you guys use?

I tend to use a Thermarest 3/4 when I am using one at all. Not a huge fan of the extra bulk they add to my pack.

if you roll a thermorest and put all your pack contents inside it, then inflate it a little i found it helps stablize the pack a bit. but when im car camping i go for the huge air mattress... as i get older the hard ground gets harder and i get softer.... thermarest 3/4th or a zrest foam.... i found the foam is warmer in the later parts of the season......

Exped Downmat.

More work to inflate it than a thermarest, but it's both warmer and more comfortable.

we use pool floats! the deflate pretty small and it's like sleeping on an air mattress.

Well, sure, in TX where you don't WANT any insulation underneath you :D

Try a pool raft when you're camping in sub-zero temperatures and you'll wake up with your butt frozen to that mat

yeah...didn't think about cold. cold here isn't a problem. and if it was i wouldn't be camping in sub zero temps! thats just crazy!

You don't know crazy until you've slept in a hammock in sub-zero weather with 40 mph winds. That's some fun stuff. You REALLY gotta have your insulation system dialed in when you've got wind whipping around you from every direction, including underneath :D

I've been considering hammocks, but not quite for that kind of environment / weather.

 the thing i don't miss the most about NJ is the cold and it didn't get THAT cold!

The cold is the one thing I miss MOST about living in the northeast. Here in Georgia people freak out if we get a quarter inch of snow.

I found a peice of teal colored foam once that was about 2ft wide and 4 ft long, so i rolled that up and now carry that along with me on any and all trips.
