Gotta give it to the Multitools, they get the job done.

Hey All,

I just wanted to give props to the multitools and all of you enlightened people who prefer them. They've always appeared to me to be underrated in the eyes of a lot of knife nuts on the forums. I tend to focus more on the BM's, Spyderco's and such and never gave much attention to SAKs and LM types. On a regular day, if I can only grab one of my knives, it always ended up being a BM or a Spyderco. If I felt like carring more, I'd usually go for my LM Wave also, but it always took 2nd priority.

I have a trucking company and I've been alternating between a Camillus Heat and a BM 551 whenever I ended up in the wearhouse or on the truck. Well, last week I decided to just bring my Wave and surprise- it worked perfectly. The options to choose between plain edge and serrated, clip point and sheepsfoot, screwdrivers and pliers, it got the job done regardless of what I threw at it. In terms of utilitarian purposes, it can't be beaten for most of the jobs. My only complaint for it is I don't have much fun with it. I have way more fun flicking my blades open and closed, but that part really isn't necessary. So my priorities have changed, working on the truck I'll always at least have my Wave and other days I'll carry whatever I feel like.

I have to agree 100%! The last couple weeks I have been carrying my Leatherman Charge Ti exclusively, and it has handled every task! This is the second time around for me and a Charge, the first one I could not get used to the stubby phillips bit, but so far I have been enjoying this one!

But yea, if you could "flick" the knife blades open it would be much cooler! ;)

I've always wondered why a person would carry a knife only. Not to diss people or anything but I really, genuinely don't know why people would carry a knife only. Knives are good for cutting leather, opening boxes, maybe gutting a fish or some animal, peeling or slicing a fruit, etc. But a multitool can do so much more. So can you knife nuts out there explain to me what's the reason for carrying a knife only? Just wanted to know the thinking behind it that's all.

And also forgot to add knives are good for "self-defense". Why this multi-billion dollar industry and huge demand for single knives?

I can't speak for anyone else, but there are a few reasons why I like to carry just a knife or at least a knife:

As useful as a Multitool is, I have never come across a scenario where I absolutely needed one. Sure things are more convenient and it can make one more efficient, but they never become the deciding factor in accomplishing a task that I find important.

I have in more occasions than I'd like to remember had to fight for my life. We're not talking Mall Ninja paranoia, I've fought for my life with enough witnesses to tell the stories for me. In a scenario like that, I'm not so sure that it would be the deciding factor, but it sure helps. On a regular day, cutting jobs would be the primary thing I may come across and the single knives are incredibly fun. I don't like stuffing my pockets, so to bring both a knife and a multitool can be burdensome for me.

To sum it up:
Single knives are more fun for me
SD
I don't like to stuff my pockets

On a work day in the wearhouse or on the truck, all bets are off and I'll take my multitool 1st.

I don't carry knifes or multitools for use. I just like to admire them for their craftsmanship. :D
