Well, I was out down by the Portage (its a canal that cuts the Keweenaw in half) today and yesterday. Snapped these pics yesterday when it was maybe maybe 5 degrees (F) cooler. Just got back in from a jog today, and I was thinking where else can you go to school and still have this type of country to enjoy literally on-campus!

It does look pretty desolate, but trust me its not. Its just foggy out, about the first hint of humity we've had in 6 months, and man are the sinuses loving it!

Here's a pic looking down on that same area in clearer weather.

Makes me feel homesick. I Grew up in the UP with summer long trips, but I've always lived with the trolls :D.

Only been to Houghton/Hancock a few times (twenty some years ago) - to jump on the little seaplane that goes to Isle Royale. But I do remember what a great place it is and thinking I would be cool to live there. Gorgeous place!

Yeah, I definately love the area... now to figure out the school part ;) BUt hey, at least hitting the trails for a jog or bike helps keep me sane when the snows not here, and snowshoeing when it is. Myself being a troll from the Detroit area, this is a welcome change from the cityscape!

I have loved the UP since I first went there in 1957 as a toddler. When it came to choose a college I looked at the three universities in the UP,
I chose Michigan Tech. Got a degree in EE, worked in the corporate world for a few years, missed the UP and decided to move back. I met my wife, we bought a 160 acres, started a small construction firm, three kids and 30 years later we are still here loving every minute of it.

Michigan Tech class of double-ought. I miss the place dearly haven't been up there in a few years now. Spent many weekends copper-country-cruising. Logging roads, old mines, waterfalls, just plain rugged terrain. Truely God's Country:) Thanks for the flashback.

Wow, had no idea so many Tech Alums were here! Don't suppose any of you got into any mid-spring trouts?

Buck 268, I am jealous! I grew up there in the UP! Born in Hancock, raised in White Pine. Both parents from the Copper Country, relatives still there. I was up there last summer doing geneology research at the Houghton County courthouse. Stayed at the motel just at the edge of campus on the canal (I think it's a Super 8-two story). Spent a good portion of my life in the Copper Country. A lot of time around Toivola too. I'd go back in a heartbeat, but when I was trying the job market was pretty skinnny. Are you going to school at Tech or teaching? Those pics bring back a lot of memories. I miss the place. Stuck here in frozen Minnesota for now. A guy's got to make a living!

Well, after a slight (3 year) sobatical (probably slaughtered the spelling but oh well) after my first year of college I've returned to finish the job. Except in my infinate wisdom I decided to change majors so I got almost 4 full years of school (well I guess its 3 now) left. Of course, thats assuming I can pull off decent grades this semester... I'm a horrible student; I try so hard but I'm just not a student, I'm a worker. Oh well, everybody has their problems.

Yeah well, at least you're living in God's country while going to school! Good luck with the education. My brother graduated from Tech and has done very well for himself. It's a good stepping stone into a nice living!
