yesterday a buddy gave me a knife hed forgot hed had for years, and while it it is in pretty darn good shape, the blade needs some work. its big, beefy and has the Idaho stamp. can anyone tell me a little about this knife? i havent seen one other than his, so was it a model that was made for only a few years, and is it somewhat collectible? its definitely a workhorse and will be something that will be one of my hard use knives when i get it up to snuff....

That's a model 279 Folding Alpha Hunter and they were introduced about 10 years ago and are still in production today. It has the standard 420HC steel blade. There is also the 277 which is the same knife but with rosewood handles and it has been offered in different upgraded blade steels over the years.

It will make you a good user, but there's nothing in my opinion that would make it particularly "collectable" except perhaps for someone collecting (I'm one) the Idaho stamped models. Even given the Idaho stamp, I'd not be interested unless it was new in the box. This is just my opinion though.

thanks for the info man. my plans are to make this a user when i get the blade touched up and sharp.

You're going to like it. It has the slickest, smoothest and easiest one hand opening of any knife I own. I believe it has to do with the large bronze bushings on the blade pivot.
