I've seen one or two threads on here discussing the miseries of gout.

Gout is an inflammation of usually one joint at a time. At its worst, it is remarkably painful. It can be debilitating, with swelling lasting for weeks, and often crippling.

Since I love to drink beer and eat lots of red meat, I am particularly susceptible to this disease. Plus, my father was prone to it. So between my lifestyle and genetic history, I'm a numero uno candidate.

I have found something, very common, and very safe, that eliminates gout attacks. Period. It eliminates them because it fixes the problem of why you get a gout attack in the first place-- accumulations of uric acid crystals. This miracle herbal remedy keeps your uric acid level down to acceptable levels-- much like the allupurinol does for my Dad. But that is a pharmaceutical chemical that you need a prescription for.

By now, you are probably saying, Please tell me komondor what this miracle herbal remedy is...

It's........are you ready?.................................................................

celery seed.

600 mg of celery seed (1 tablet) taken three times daily will eliminate your gout. It did for me anyways. Although I still drink more beer than I should, and still eat lots of meat, I exercise regularly and drink plenty of fluids. But this alone didn't prevent me from the painful attacks before I started taking celery seed.

It's amazing stuff. Try it. I've been on it for about a year now, without a single attack.

i get gout and its so painfull i wouldnt wish it on anybody.i usually get naproxin from the doc. but i will definatly try this. thanks komondor

Another old remedy that has worked for me - all the fresh cherries you can eat. I have found that canned cherries work fairly well, but when I originally heard of this, I was told that fresh, whole cherries were best.

i tried the fresh cerries the last time i had an attack and they didnt work. but it was a bad attack all the way up to my knee.

You can also get cherry tablets that are supposed to work. I have taken them in the past and they may have worked but I can't really remember.

I will try the celery seed, nothing to lose.

Also, for people who get gout and don't want to take allipurinol, get your doctor to give you an open prescription for indomethicin and take it as soon as you feel a flare up. It works a lot better than any other medicine I've used for gout, doesn't make you sick like clochimine does, and its pretty cheap. Wal*Mart has a $4 prescription for it and even at my pharmacy its like $15 for 30 pills which is enough for 2 or 3 attacks.

12 year olds don't usually get gout

I work with a guy who has gout and he also loves beer. He told me that he usually waits until he feels an attack coming on, then he just eats and drinks what he wants, since he knows he is going to be in agony anyway.

Thanks for the tip Komondor, I'm going to pick some up today. I suffer from pseudo-gout, a similar affliction caused by an accumulation of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals in the joint area and cartilage. I have been trying lots of organic black cherry juice but it hasn't made a significant difference. Maybe this will help

FWIW, until 1994 I suffered with crippling bouts of gout.
In Oct. '94 I had five cardiac bypasses. I was obese, size 48 in the waist. I started a low-fat diet, lots of walking, lost 8 inches in the waist, then started resistance training.

In the last 14 years since the surgery I have not had one single case of gout.

What's wrong with Allopurinol? Wal-Mart's got it for $4, too. And side effects are rare.

Black cherry juice was effective for me. The problems are that a) it sometimes gives you diarrhea, b) it's a lot more expensive, and c) just drinking 8 ounces a day is harder than 3 small tablets a day. A vitamin herbal supplement is all it is.

And, MikeH, there is no overemphasizing the importance of weight loss and exercise. You gotta keep the blood moving.

But those who would be prone to this disease might still be susceptible even after a stringent diet/exercise routine.

Don't forget, also, this supplement takes the place of allipurinol. It prevents the gout attack. If you are starting to get a gout attack celery seed will not help you.

That's when I recommend 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in water. Plug your nose and gulp it down.

Simply staying properly hydrated helps. Gout is a concentration of uric acid crystals.

I've never suffered from gout myself, but my father did, quite badly.

Had an attack once and it kinda built up slowly. Not knowing what it was, I tried exercising and stretching it. Baaad mistake. Finally gave up, got a shot from the doctor and it went away in bout 3 days. Funny but the doctor suggested I may have had a lil too much vege protein :p
Anyways in the mean time, elevate your affected area to reduce swelling and the ballbusting pain. Its a godsend until the next time you need to lower it.

I just make a habit of drinking half a gallon or more of straight water a day. It has reduced the occurances to almost nothing.

Real cranberry juice. It was recommended by a doctor to a friend's father who sufferered terribly with gout. It worked for him.

black cherry juice worked wonders for my mom.
She couldn't use Allopurinol because of some sort of drug interaction problem.
I didn't ask her what it was, cause her doctor told her to drink black cherry juice
instead. It worked well.

Well the down sides to cherry juice is 1)trying to find the stuff, and 2) drinking enough to make it work just might be too much sugar; odds are if you are suffering gout you could stand to lose a few pounds and all that sugar might not be the answer.

Also if you do elevate your gouty toe; make sure it stays warm. A gout attack is basically a precipitation of a compound from solution into solid crystals; kinda like getting little glass crystals in your joints. This compound comes out of solution easier at lower temps so keep that toe warm. (that is why a lot of gout attacks hit you at night as your body temp lowers, more crystals form).
