I have been a fan of the old style BDU trousers as my wilderness pants for a long time. They are cheap and tough, with freedom of movement. I stuck with tan or grey because I don't want to appear as some sort of paramilitary weirdo to the sheeple. (especially if I happen to have a hatchet or machete strapped to my pack!)

I was in a surplus store recently and they had the new style camo pants that were used, but at a great price. I tried them on and like them so much better than the old style. They have better pockets, with added pockets below the knees, a better waist drawstring system, and they fit better too. Only thing I wasn't crazy about is they only come in the digi-cam pattern. The ones I got are faded though, and the new pattern is more subtle so I think it won't draw any unwanted attention.

Just wanted to say, check these out if you haven't already! I'm getting more, they are great woods bumming pants.

Good luck getting stains out. The pockets are cool, with the exception of Velcro. The crotch also seems to have a tendency to rip more than the BDU pants. Dont even get me started on the stupid top.

Really? I like the top better than the old side buckles. Granted I am not wearing these as a serviceman, may be completely different there.
Funny you menion stains, the pair I got was clean, no stains noticed and I figured if I got any they would blend into the pattern well.

FYI: I believe that Brigade Quartermasters has the new style pants in Tan and olive and other solid colors.

The surplus store also did but they were not genuine, they were made in China knockoffs. I may try them out anyway, but I figured they weren't made as well. Crazy part is, the knockoff ones were $60 new! I paid less than half that for the real deal ones that were used.

The reason I liked the buttons on the side instead of the velcro was that if you put anything in the pockets, the velcro would come undone from the weight, opposed to the buttons. The calf pocket is kinda cool, but if you blouse your pants, even putting something like a small pocket knife makes it sit lower on your boot. It was designed to fit exactly one 30 round magazine.

Once you get rolling in some red clay or mud, its over. The wear out date for the ACUs is under a year as well. But I have worn one set to the field, roughly 9 weeks worth in a span of 3 months, and they are ruined!

The velcro is done for, crotch ripped out and just looks crappy.

Well shoot, I thought they'd be tougher than that. Guess I'll have to use them for a while, see how they really shake out before I buy more. Thanks for the heads up on the shortcomings though, you have much more field time in them than I do.

Brigade's are Tru-SPec (US Materials assembled in Honduras, just like the issue ACU ones). They come in OD, Black, Navy, and Tan for $40.

Thanks, I'm gonna check theirs out. Some tan ones would be cool.

i just bought some of these at Dick's sporting goods, pants and the shirt, and were 25 to 30 dollars U.S. each. US materials assembled in (you guessed it)China.
i have not tried them yet, but if the turkey see me then i will know that this pattern does not work.

The Dick's ACU's are only available in the ACU pattern.

I don't really see what good that ACU pattern would do, especially in woodland enviroments. It's an awfully light colored pattern, that was developed to kill 2 birds with one stone- to be good for either enviroment so the .gov could save money not having to issue out seperate uniforms for diffirent enviroments.

i still had the tags that say color digital woodland.
and yes i went to my closet and compared to my other camo they are a little lighter, but i still think they will work fine here in PA.
and if not they will blend in just fine when headlight hunting.

Hey GUys...

Must have been an Officer's pair.. :)

I've got a pair and really like them as well...

I've also got a pair of desert MARPAT..
Don't like the cut as much as the ACU pants...

It seems that it's the same situation with Swedish military uniforms. The old M/59 issue (dark green) are better than the new M/90 camo fabric wise, but the best of all is the M/38 or M39/58 grey wool uniforms.
Some years ago a joint swedish homeguard/ USNG group went skiing in the Swedish mountains. After three days they had to airlift the US troops back home. Their super fancy goretex uniforms didnt cope with the cold but the swedish troops used the old WWII uniforms wool uniforms and they had a nice trip. Now it might have been differencies in training or something else, but it proved that old stuff still works :)

Unfortunately the old wool uniforms are getting rare, the green ones are getting rare as well but the M90 camo can be found anywhere since the Swedish government is dismantling everything painted green, but dont tell the russians :)

UScav has the ACU cut uniforms too, I think they have the desert and older woodland pattern in the cut. I think they made some really stupid mistakes in the design but that's just my opinion.

I like the old-school BDU's a lot, as well as my Brit DPM field jacket. Based on these posts, I'm holding off on the new ACU stuff.

Has anyone ever found a website with some comparison pics of the various patterns in the field? I'd really like to see tiger stripe, woodland, digital, RealTree etc. etc. side-by-side in a typical woodland setting. But I'm not about to buy 5 or 6 jackets just to see which hides better. Your thoughts on the best camo for discreet woodswalking? I do my shooting with a camera not a gun so I don't have to wear orange :)

I read about a comparison (unfortunately I can't remember where) and Multicam by Crye Precision was the standout for multiple environments. Its pricey but apparently top of the line.
