I currently have a cheapy Garmen etrex (cost me under $100 three years ago). I'd like to get one of the more advanced color etrex's, but that has downloadable maps and color screen and auto accessories.

I want a handheld model for hiking/camping/fishing, also something that can be mounted in my truck, just for grins and giggles.

I'm open to suggestions.

If you're really serious about upgrading, who not move up to a higher-end line altogether? Look at the GPSMAP76 series, for example. A larger screen is especially important if you're interested in a dash mount.

My current GPS is the older GPSMAP76S, and it's been a great unit. If buying today, I'd want the GPSMAP76csx.

The GPSMAP60 series has a lot of fans too.

The GPSMAP60CSx is the one I have though I haven't learned how to use it in detail. This model has received many excellent ratings !.... There is a new Garmin GPS TV ad which is really funny especially the last second !!!

I checked out that series and I am impressed. Appears to be in my price range, too.

Is there a difference in software?? I'd like something in the topo line rather than a road-map layout.

Thanks for the replies - steve

The GPSMAP76 units can be loaded with any of the Garmin MapSource products. Topo data for the entire country costs $90.

The higher-end eTrex units can also be loaded with MapSource products. I believe the eTrex Legend is the lowest-level Garmin unit with mapping capabilities.

Garmin Mapsource topos suck unless you are in the national parks. They also don't have any aerial photos.

Check out the Delorme PN-20. Great unit and great maps and satellite photos are available. Computer software is better than Mapsource in my opinion also. I'm a software engineer FWIW.

I have owned Garmin’s since the GPS45 and some Magellan’s and other units. I just recently switched to the Delorme and haven't looked back. I do mapping and SAR for my fire department as well as use it to plan my hikes and camping trips. Also be aware that Garmin’s maps do not let many areas be routable so not all areas can have routes. The Delorme can. You can even make up routes where none should exist.

I currently also have a Garmin Vista C and GPS 76CS and a GPS 12XL. I like the Vista C and the 76CS but I almost exclusively use the Delorme now. The GPS12XL has been relegated to doing only APRS duty now.

Here is some more info but shop around. You might be able to get it cheaper.
Delorme information
