Trying to decide on a GPs purchase, I have the bucks for either an Explorist 300 or Etrex Legend Mapping, both for $200. Any advice? I like the bells and whistles on the Explorist 300, I do not know whether I will ever cough up the bucks, (almost the cost of the unit) for the Etrex mapping software.I am limited in my travels, Canada Manitoba west is all I forsee.
Any advice or feedback from owners/users of the above appreciated. Have googled and searched here but didna find the answers ..
cheers

I don't have any experience with the Explorest, but the eTrex Legend is an excellent unit, perfect for lightweight packing, and enough 'toys' to keep most people occupied for a long time. The picture-driven menu, thumb stud, and mapping abilities are high points of the Legend.

You should shop around for a better price though. The eTrex Legend is $150 at www.gpsnow.com . Maybe you're price is different, being in Canada. Exchange rate, higher prices.

Happy shopping,
Bob

I believe the Explorist series doesn't have any PC interface. The Etrex's are PC connectable.

This is great feature. Beats the heck out of entering Waypoints manually. You can also download MAPQUEST and Topo maps to the legend. I love mine.

More reasons to prefer GPS units with computer communications:

If Geocaching, you can use the free EasyGPS program to send waypoints directly to the GPS receiver. Beats the heck out of entering them manually. More accurate too.

There are several free GIS mapping programs with the capability to interact with mainstream GPS units. You don't have to buy expensive software for computer mapping. You do have to buy the Garmin MapSource products if you want to load maps onto the GPS unit itself.

Best Wishes,

Thx for the help guys.. I think I will go look again at the Etrex, as for price these are knockdowns are at Can. Tire and Walmart so doubt I will beat them by much up here, and easier to whine locally if something goes wrong. A cherry when it comes to shopping on the net.. must get paypal one of these days..
cheers

Don't know what your shopping situation is like up there, but around here WalMart is sky-high on GPSes. Target has fair prices and sometimes good sales, if you have those stores. I'm pretty sure Target carries the eTrex Legend.

You also don't need a PayPal account or credit card to shop online. Most places have a printable form that you can mail in and pay with a check or money order.

Thanks again for info..
I have used postal orders and also have a friend who offered his PayPal account to use it when it speeds things up.
I bought the Etrex Legend two nights ago, after searching the price seemed lower than most up here, and I had the fever.. I bought it from the local Canadian Tire.
As for unit, so far can barely put it down.. love the mini joystick, quick navigation though pages, etc. Seems very easy to use. Will give it a better workout this weekend. Mostly just walks in the flatlands so far, and programming in the route to my favorite Tim Hortons. :D
Now if I can find someone to share the topo for western Canada I will be all set.
cheers
