I've recently started going out Geocaching in the forests here in Southern Illinois, but I haven't gotten my own GPS unit yet (We use a friend's).

Do any of you also engage in this activity, and if so, do you have any recommendations (or units to avoid) for my upcoming handheld GPS purchase?

Buy the best unit you can afford.

I recently moved up to a Gamin 60CSx, which gives excellent reception under heavy foilage.

Whatever unit you get ~ Have Fun ~ Geocaching is addictive.:D

If geocaching/GPSing in the forest, I suggest that what ever unit you buy, make sure it has a plug for an external antenna. Most units do, except the very cheapest.

My unit is the Garmin GPS76S and I've been very happy with it. There are updated versions of that model available now too.

I've geocached in Southern Illinois too - a great activity to save for Winter in that part of the country - no bugs, poison ivy, etc.

I feel like this is a term I should know being a land surveyor already hehe

but, what is Geocaching and what, if anything, is the end product?

Everything you need to know. It's treasure hunting in a sense.

I have the model with the extra gadgets in it (76Sx?) and love it. I really like the Garmin interface best too.

The most important thing to get is that new 12 channel receiver (Sirf?) because it is far superior in tree cover, metal building, inside cars on the road, etc.
