Only did a quick scan, so if this has been covered in great detail in another thread, flame me and forgive me, please. Anyway, I know what kind of GPS unit I want to get, but am wondering if anyone on here has a good source of purchasing GPS units. Oh, that carries Garmin.

Thanks in advance (or uh... sorry in advance....) :)

No input at all? Com'on, I know someone on here knows the good places? Or is there just no discount on GPS's?

I live just up the street from the Garmin World headquarters:D I've never found any discounted prices on their newer models. I just bought an E-Trex Legend about 3 months ago, and really like it. The lowest I've seen it anywhere is $249. I picked mine up at a local Wal-Mart. I did see an older model for $60 in a wal-mart a week or so ago, but it was quite old.

Hi Rockspyder,

A good source would be from TVNAV just drop Darrel Goheen an email:

I use the Etrex Vista for our scouts and it's one nice piece of GPS as the 24 MB memory can hold the Benelux roads & recretion database completely, so I got the whole of the Benelux inside the Vista and very detailed.

Thanks guys. I did find the Legend for $220, at a place called GPS City (gpscity.com).

Right now I'm waiting for a return message from TVNAV on their price for the Legend. I've pretty much decided that is the one I want. I've love to get the Vista, but at another $100 US, it is a little outside my price range. Or actually, maybe a lot outside my price range. :(

Cool! THANKS Javahed! I'm checking 'em out now. If I can't find it there, I can't find it.

Hey Bagheera, thanks for the link (forgot to do that earlier).

How does the Vista work out under light tree cover? Any problems?

I've pretty much narrowed it down to the Legend, from etronics or tvnav. Price is really close, return policies a little different. A big concern I have is that I get the thing from TVNAV, find out that it won't do squat under light tree cover (like, under trees, but can see the sky through them in many small holes), and can't return it because it works as advertised, just not good enough for me. I've only played a VERY little bit with GPS's, so I'm stupid when it comes to lock-on capabilities.

What kind is yours, Ewok? How does it lock-up under light tree cover?

Thanks for the link.

Rockspyder,

Sorry, I haven't had much time lately to visit the BF as I've had and still am having loads of problems with my work laptop and home PC after a Nimda Virus attack and on top of that a laptop power supply failure and hard disk crash at home.

Rockspyder, my Vista works nicely even under tree cover as long as the canopy isn't to closed.
It's also a difference when you're trying to lock on to the satelites under tree cover it can take some time but if you arrive under tree cover while the satelites are already locked on it will stay locked on much better/longer.

In May we payed $290 for the Vista and it's well worth it.

Thanks Bagheera. I'm planning on ordering a Legend today. The Vista is a little too steep for me, and I don't really need the altimeter or mag compass. Well, maybe the mag compass. But I figure its absence in the GPS will make me more certain to take a mechanical compass as back-up.

I have the Vista. I've mostly just used it in the car, so far, so I can't address the tree cover question.

Thanks all. I ordered the Legend today. I bought it from tvnav.com. It had the best prices by a fair margin.

Thanks again.
