First, hello to you all! I've popped in here once in a while over the years, and found that this forum has got to be one of the best places to root around and find useful info on knives and axes past and present. That said; I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out with an identity crisis my "dump find" is having.

You can just see the GBA and the lower part of the circular stamp above the "Made in Sweden" stamp. I can't find the initials, I assume they have been filed off by whomever owned this and who I guess modified the profile for whatever reason. Dummy! Grrrrrrr! So, even after an obscene amount of time Googling and Youtubing "Vintage Gränsfors Bruks Axe", "Old Gränsfors Bruks Axe", "Antique Gränsfors Bruks Axe", and on and on, and on... Anyhoo, I've seen a video of a kid with his grandad's old Hults Bruk axe that is identical to mine in every way, but, it's not a Gränsfors. So that doesn't help much. I go to the Gränsfors Bruks website and none of the modern axes are similar enough to the one above for me to be able to say "Ahah! It's a ****!"

Righty then, what say you, you Gränsfors Bruks affectionados out there? When did a Gränsfors Bruks Axe of that style not have a beard? And what darn style is it? It almost looks like a Scandinavian, but without a beard, and with an uprake rising from near the eye to the edge of the blade kinda like their American Felling Axe. Anyways, I've absorbed some of your guy's knowledge before, but this is my first time asking; and I'd like to say thanks in advance for any help you can provide. (Even if it IS just a link to some obscure axe forum.) :D

Cheers!

no idea but ditto the nice score! that might be worth quite a bit to a collector.

the initials-of-the-blacksmith is a relatively new thing that came about as part of Gransfors' re-imagining several years ago. older ones like you have didn't have that "feature".

nice axe, BTW.

The weight listed would make it the equivalent of the Scandinavian forest axe in their current lineup.

Couldn't hurt to fire off some pictures to Gransfors, they'd have a fair chance of IDing for you

Edit: Also awesome score!! I should hang around the dump more often!

Age-wise, I don't have any idea. As far as IDing it, there's not much more to ID. It's an old GB, from well before they starting stamping the smith's initials as Ben (bjp) said.

Nice score!!!

Wouldn't the stamped weight just be referring to the weight o the head? The Scandi forest axe has a 2lb head, but the whole thing weighs in a little under 2 1/2.

It does remind me oif the Scandinavian forest axe except the hammer poll extends back further from the haft on your dumpster find.

Thanx guys for your replies! And yeah, it is a SWEET score indeed. The stuff that gets chucked at this dump is INSANE! In the last year I've got a nearly new full suspension mountain bike, about a thousand dollars worth of old tools, (electric and manual), 3 instant hot water heaters, 20 or 30 circular saw blades, 4 new Siemens 53 watt solar panels, and on and on. You gotta LOVE small town dumps where 99% of the people in town are on union wages. Anyhoo, thanks for responding everyone, and I just sent those pictures off to Gränsfors Bruks. It's 11PM there right now, (2PM here), so I'll have to wait patiently until midnight before I have any chance of a reply from them. (Or maybe not so patiently.) Gotta know now! Gotta know NOW! :D

Righty then, thanx again everyone, and I'll be sure to let ya'all know what Gränsfors Bruks says about the axe.

Cheers!

Wrong side of the mountains, but good guess! I'm in Kitimat BC actually. (Alcan smelter town, with 3 up-and-coming compressed natural gas plants. And the town with all of the hullabaloo surrounding it and the proposed bitumen pipeline.) We're BUSY here! And everyone has a stupid amount of "stupid money". Or so it seems. Just got a propane tabletop radiant heat patio heater from the dump. Took 30 seconds with a pair of pliers to bend the thermocouple back into contact with the pilot light and there ya go, and nearly new working patio heater! Anyhoo, I'm hoping that GB will get back to me soon, or I'm gonna have to email them again without any pictures, and hope it was the spam filter that got the first email.

Cheers!
